Lincoln, Neb. - The Nebraska men’s tennis team (7-4, 0-0 Big Ten) secured the 4-1 win on Friday night, over Texas Tech (5-5, 0-0 Big 12) in their 21st meeting.
To kick off doubles against the Red Raiders, Court Three Leo Linquet and Shunya Maruyama had a dominant start and 6-2 win, over Jonas Gundacker and Takeyasu Sekiguchi. No. 1 doubles duo Anton Shepp and Nic Wiedenhorn battled, but fell 4-6, to TTU’s ranked No. 39 Sebastian Abboud and Piotr Pawlak. The doubles point came down to Court Two’s Lars Johann and Calvin Mueller. Johann and Mueller rallied into a set tiebreaker against Lorenzo Esquici and Olle Wallin. Johann and Mueller battled and took the tiebreaker, winning the match and clinching the doubles point, 7-6(10).
With the doubles point secured for NU, the Huskers took on the Red Raiders in singles. Mueller competed in the No. 2 slot and defeated Esquici in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Next to finish was Johann on Court Four, with a tight first set and dominant second. Johann won over Niksa Arsic, 7-5, 6-1. Shepp fought on Court One, matched up against ranked No. 85 Olle Wallin, but fell 4-6, 4-6. Rudi Christiansen clinched another singles point and the win for the Huskers, with his 6-3, 6-2, victory over Abboud on Court Six. No. 3 and No. 5 singles went unfinished, leaving Maruyama up 6-1, 6-5, against Gundacker and Sysoev fighting in the second set, 6-4, 3-5, against Pawlak.
After defeating the Red Raiders, the Huskers claim a 7-4 start to the season program, the best since 2019. The win over TTU was only NU’s third in the series. With Johann and Mueller’s tiebreak win on Court Two, Mueller and the No. 2 doubles slot, improved to 9-2 in the spring.
