Huskers Claim Second-Straight Big Ten Player of the Week Honor

Lincoln, Neb. - Nebraska’s Calvin Mueller was named the Big Ten Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for his second-career time, announced Wednesday morning. Mueller is the second consecutive Husker to win the award this season, as Anton Shepp was honored Jan. 17, 2024.

Mueller, a junior from Bruchkoebel, Germany, is in his third year with the Big Red. He finished the fall season with a 10-3 singles record and was the first Husker to claim the Big Ten Individuals Singles Championship. Mueller has now gone 8-0 to start off the spring season with NU. In four duals, Mueller has a 4-0 record in the No. 1 singles slot, as well as in No. 2 doubles. On Jan. 21, the Huskers had a doubleheader against Omaha and Creighton, where Mueller’s four straight-set wins helped the Big Red to two victories, defeating Omaha 7-0 and Creighton 4-0. Against Omaha, Mueller defeated Mikhail Korkunov (UNO) 7-5, 6-2 in singles. In doubles, partnered with sophomore Nikolay Sysoev, the pair defeated Gabe Whiston and Ethan Gaubert (UNO) 6-2. Mueller and Sysoev’s doubles win secured the doubles point for NU. Against Creighton, Mueller took down Kirtan Patel (CU) 6-0, 6-2 in singles. In doubles, partnered with Sysoev again, the No. 2 matchup decided the doubles point. Mueller and Sysoev outlasted Shin Inoue and Zachary Kuo (CU) 7-5 to win the match and point for the Huskers.

Mueller and the Big Red continue spring play at ITA Kickoff Weekend this Friday, Jan. 26., in Lexington, Ky. NU will take on Alabama first, play beginning at 4 p.m. (CT).
