NU Hosts Omaha, Creighton on Sunday

Lincoln, Neb. - After a 2-0 start to the season, the Nebraska men’s tennis team is set to host another doubleheader at home on Sunday, Jan. 21. The matches will be held at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center, with action starting against the Mavericks at 11 a.m. (CT) and the Bluejays at 5 p.m. (CT). Scouting Omaha/Series History
- The Mavericks have started the season with a 2-1 mark.
- Omaha ended the 2022-23 season with an overall mark of 13-11 and a 2-1 Summit League conference record.
- The 2023-24 season is Head Coach Matthew Barlow’s third with the Mavericks. Barlow has led the Mavericks to 9+ win seasons both of his years at the helm.
- Series History: 35-10 NU; Since their first matchup in 1952, the Big Red has gone 35-10 against Omaha.

Scouting Creighton/Series History
- The Bluejays have started the season with a 2-1 mark.
- CU ended the 2022-23 season with an overall mark of 13-7 and a 4-0 Big East conference record.
- Creighton has a new head coach, Gerhard Posch, hired in August of 2023. Posch graduated from NU and played in the No. 1 singles slot.
- Series History: 51-2 NU; Since their first matchup in 1954, NU has gone 51-2 against Creighton.
- The Bluejays played the Huskers last on Jan. 13, 2024, and lost 0-7 at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center.

The Huskers are 2-0 on the spring 2023-24 season, having wins over both North Dakota and Creighton. The pair of 7-0 sweeps were the first matches of Head Coach Peter Kobelt and Assistant Coach Raymond Sarmiento’s in their new positions. Additionally, junior Anton Shepp was awarded Big Ten Player of the Week on Jan. 17, 2024, after his performance in the UND, Creighton doubleheader.

In the fall, NU went 37-33 in singles play and 16-15 in doubles. Most notably from the fall, junior Calvin Mueller posted a 10-3 record en route to the Big Ten Individual Championship. Doubles duo Anton Shepp and Nic Wiedenhorn went 4-3 on the season, after making it to the semifinals match in the ITA Regionals Tournament. The pair was invited to ITA Nationals in California to close out fall play. Also finding success on the doubles court was duo Mueller and Leo Linquet, reaching a 3-1 record and placing second at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic.

The Huskers ended the 2023 spring season with a team ITA ranking of No. 52, the highest end of season ranking since 2011. NU was also ranked No. 3 in the ITA Central Region Team Ranking.

From the 2022-23 season, Nebraska has seven returning letterwinners, including Rudi Christiansen, Roni Hietaranta, Lars Johann, Leo Linquet, Shunya Maruyama, Calvin Mueller and Nic Wiedenhorn. In the fall, NU welcomed four newcomers, transfers Anton Shepp, Nikolay Sysoev and Henry Bilicic, and freshman Colson Wells, for the 2023-24 season.
