Huskers Gear Up for Big Tens, Conclude Play at ITA Championships

Madison, Wis. - The Nebraska men’s tennis team heads north for the Big Ten Individual Championships held in Wisconsin, Nov. 2-5. The Badgers will host the three-day tournament that consists of both singles and doubles play for individual athletes within the Big Ten Conference. 

The tournament will feature eight Big Ten schools with action beginning at 5 p.m. (CT) on Thursday and 9 a.m. (CT) on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. 

Five Huskers will make the trip to the tournament, as Calvin Mueller, Rudi Christiansen, Lars Johann, Shunya Maruyama and Nikolay Sysoev will see action in the singles draw. Mueller and Johann, as well as Maruyama and Sysoev will be competing on the doubles side. 

Mueller has had a strong start to his 2023 campaign, gathering five singles wins in his first two tournaments, while boasting a 5-2 doubles record partnering with Christiansen and Leo Linquet. Aside from his doubles success partnered with Mueller, Christiansen has also recorded three singles wins at the ITA Regionals. 

Johann is looking to record his first singles and doubles victory of the fall season as he will be competing in his third tournament of the fall campaign. Maruyama is also competing in his third of the fall season, holding a 2-4 mark in singles action. Rounding out the group is Sysoev who is looking to build on his current 2-3 record in singles play and 2-2 mark in doubles. 

At the ITA National Fall Championships, Anton Shepp and Nic Wiedenhorn went 1-2 and their fall doubles competition.
