Huskers Fall to Hawkeyes at Home

The Nebraska swimming and diving team fell to Iowa with a final score of 159.5-140.5 on Friday at the Devaney Natatorium. 

The Huskers started the meet strong with a winning relay team. Sarah Barton, Jojo Randby, Beatrix Tanko and Emily Haimes combined for first in the 400 medley relay (3:48.04). 

Gena Jorgenson had two standout performances in the 1000 freestyle and the 500 freestyle. The sophomore from Aberdeen, S.D., secured two victories with times of 10:10.44 and 4:53.99.. She added a third-place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:51.63). 

Barton also came up big for the Huskers. Along with her contribution to the winning 400 medley relay, Barton added three runner-up finishes in the 200 butterfly (2:01.54), 200 backstroke (2:02.35) and 200 IM (2:05.60). 

Junior Maia Hall earned two second-place finishes and a fourth-place finish for the Huskers. She also contributed to the second-place 400 medley relay team. Hall finished second in the 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke with times of 2:01.54 and 2:19.36, respectively. Her fourth-place finish came in the 200 IM with a time of 2:08.32.

The Husker captains had an impressive showing against the Hawkeyes. Haimes logged two second-place finishes in the 50 freestyle (23.95) and the 100 freestyle (51.99). She also swam a leg in a first-place relay (400 medley relay) and the second-place relay (400 freestyle relay).

Co-captain Caitlin Cairns earned a second-place finish in the 100 butterfly (56.69). She added a third-place finish in the 100 backstroke (57.39) and combined with Hall, Kucera and Anna Vlachou for second in the 400 medley relay (3:51.96).

Freshman Abby Baxter earned her third win on the one-meter dive this season and set a career-best with a score of 320.00. Antonina Harned finished second and also set a career-best with a score of 301.45. Sophomore Kelsey Clairmont logged a 339.20 on the three-meter dive, grabbing first place and a career-best. Baxter finished third in the three-meter and Harned finished fourth. 

Freshman Olivia Swalley logged a trio of victories for the Hawkeyes in the 100 breaststroke (1:59.56), 200 breaststroke (2:17.07) and 200 IM (2:02.19).

The Huskers are back on the road for a dual with Omaha on Saturday, Nov. 18 with races beginning at 11 a.m. (CT).
