Shepp, Wiedenhorn Reach ITA Regional Semifinals

Stillwater, Okla. - The Nebraska men’s tennis team competed in the ITA Regional Championships this past weekend and doubles duo Anton Shepp and Nic Wiedenhorn reached the tournament semifinal. Eight Huskers competed in NU’s third fall tournament, and together the Big Red tallied 16 wins.

All eight Huskers played both singles and doubles in the tournament, which had a starting singles draw of 128 and a doubles draw of 64. Wiedenhorn and Shepp had a first round bye in doubles and dominated their second round match defeating New Mexico’s Daniil Kakhniuk and Arthur Bellegy, 8-2. The duo then faced teammates Rudi Christiansen and Calvin Mueller in the third round, moving forward with the 8-7 (3) win. Wiedenhorn and Shepp took on Arkansas-Fayetteville in the quarterfinals and defeated Alan Dau Franco and Melvin Manuel, winning 8-7 (6). Wiedenhorn and Shepp then faced Creighton Bluejays Alejandro Gandini and Matthew Lanahan in the tournament semifinal. The Big Red duo was outmatched by the Bluejays in a close match, falling 7-6 (2), 4-6, [8-10].

On the singles side, Mueller had the most success in the main draw, reaching the round of 16. Mueller breezed past North Dakota’s Christo Alex in the first round, winning 6-2, 6-3. In the second round, Mueller found similar success, defeating Theo Ortis from Saint Louis, 6-2, 6-2. Mueller then faced teammate Shepp, and moved on after a close 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (3) win. Mueller took on Oklahoma State’s Alejandro Garcia for the Round of 16 match-up and fell 2-6, 2-6.

Doubles duo Christiansen and Mueller made it to the third round, outmatching North Dakota’s Ethan Terry and Christo Alex, 8-3 in the first round. The pair went on to defeat Victor Tosetto and Gus Tettamble from Tulsa, 8-5. In the first round, Nikolay Sysoev and Shunya Maruyama defeated Adam Behun and Theo Ortis from Saint Louis, 8-6. The pair battled but fell in their close second round match against Arkansas-Fayetteville’s Foster Rogers and Gerard Planelles Ripoll, 7(2)-8. Leo Linquett and Lars Johann had a first round bye, but fell in their second round match against Tulsa’s Alex Okonkwo and Callum Gale, 5-8.

Overall, the Big Red gathered 10 singles wins and six doubles wins in Stillwater. Up next, the Huskers will compete in Los Angeles, Calif., at the SoCal Intercollegiate Championships starting Oct. 26.
