Five Huskers Qualify for NCAA Indoor Championships

A total of five Nebraska track and field student-athletes have qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships set for March 11-13 in Fayetteville, Ark.

Nebraska's qualifiers are Papay Glaywulu (triple jump), Lishanna Ilves (long jump), George Kusche (mile), Burger Lambrechts Jr. (shot put) and Kevin Shubert (shot put).

Lambrechts Jr. and Kusche were both NCAA Indoor Championships qualifiers last year, but the meet was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Glaywulu was a 2018 NCAA Indoor Championships qualifier, finishing 16th in the triple jump as a freshman at Oklahoma. Shubert and Ilves all first-time NCAA Championships qualifiers.

Lambrechts ranks tied for fifth nationally in the shot put after winning the Big Ten title with a personal-best throw of 67-4 3/4 (20.54m). His throw is the second-best in school history. Glaywulu was also a Big Ten champion, capturing the triple jump title. His personal-best jump of 53-6 1/4 (16.31m) at the Husker Triangular in January ranks eighth in the nation and is tied for the No. 4 jump in school history.

Kusche, the Big Ten cross country champion, ran a school-record mile time of 3:57.74 at the B1G Indoor Invitational in February to qualify for the second year in a row. Kusche was the Big Ten runner-up in the mile by .01 seconds and he is the school-record holder in both the mile and the 3,000 meters (7:50.93).

Shubert, a Millard North grad, ranks 16th nationally in the shot put after his personal-best throw of 63-2 3/4 (19.27m) at the Larry Wieczorek Invitational in January. Shubert placed fourth in the event at the Big Ten Indoor Championships.

Finally, Big Ten long jump champion Lishanna Ilves qualified for nationals with her Big Ten-winning jump of 20-9 1/4 (6.33m), which tied her for 16th in the nation. Ilves, a true freshman, ranks tied for seventh in school history in the event.

The top 16 individuals in each event qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships each year.
