Champaign, Ill. – The Nebraska women's soccer team (6-9-2, 2-5-2 Big Ten) scored its first goal in less than a minute of regulation and went on to defeat the Fighting Illini, 3-1, in Champaign at Demirjian Park on Thursday evening.
At the 46 second mark, sophomore Gwen Lane recorded her first goal of the season and second of her career as she dribbled through the defense and shot the ball from the left corner of the goal box into the back of the net.
The Fighting Illini (5-10-1, 1-7-1 Big Ten) tied the game in the 16th minute as Maeve Jones scored off an assist from Aleah Treiterer.
The Huskers retook the lead in the 24th minute as sophomore Eleanor Dale drove and took a shot from the top of the penalty box. The ball deflected off an Illinois defender to sophomore Reagan Raabe who shot and scored the game-winner. Raabe now is tied again with Dale for the team-leading seven goals on the season.
Nebraska entered halftime outshooting Illinois 12-1, including a 7-1 advantage in shots on goal.
The Huskers struck first in the second half and stretched their lead in the 56th minute. Senior Dakota Chan took the cross for the Huskers, which found Raabe inside the six who headed it into the goal. The shot was saved by the Illinois goalie, but freshman Sarah Weber grabbed the rebound and slid a shot into the back right corner of the net.
As a team, Nebraska held a 21-5 advantage in shots and recorded 10 corners to Illinois' 4.
Junior goalkeeper Makinzie Short recorded one save on the evening and was one of seven Huskers to play the entire game, as Raabe, Chan, seniors Ashley Zugay and Grace Brown, freshman Jordan Zade and Weber also played 90 minutes.
The Huskers stay on the road and travel to Minneapolis to face Minnesota and complete regular season conference play on Sunday. The match, set to be streamed on Big Ten Network Plus, will kick off at 1 p.m. (CT).
