Huskers Smash Four Home Runs, Top Shockers

Wichita, Kan. – The Nebraska baseball team produced 18 hits en route to a 10-8 win over Wichita State in a 12-inning fall exhibition game at Eck Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Cam Chick led the Husker offense with three hits, coming a double shy of hitting for the cycle. Jaxon Hallmark, Leighton Banjoff, Ty Roseberry, Luke Boynton and Shay Schanaman each had two hits. Chick and Roseberry each tallied three RBIs to pace the Big Red.

Nebraska saw pre-planned pitching appearances from Colby Gomes (2.0 innings), Cade Povich (1.0), Braxton Bragg (1.0), Gareth Stroh (1.0), Max Schreiber (1.0), Chad Luensmann (2.0), Ethan Bradford (2.0), Caleb Feekin (1.0) and Sayer Diederich (1.0).

The Shockers struck first with one run in the bottom of the first after the Huskers went down in order. Two of the first three Shockers reached base, as Paxton Wallace drove in Jack Sigrist. Gomes struck out the next two batters to leave Wallace stranded.

NU responded with two runs on four hits in the top of the second to take the lead. After a strikeout to begin the inning, each of the next five Huskers reached base. Leighton Banjoff singled before Chick blasted a two-run home run to right center field. NU loaded the bases, but left all three runners stranded. Wichita State tied the game at 2-2 with David Vanvooren's solo home run to left field.

The Huskers added two runs in the top of the third to take a 4-2 lead. Chick and Roseberry each produced RBI singles to bring in Luke Roskam and Banjoff. NU had four hits during the frame. WSU left its lone baserunner in the bottom of the third stranded, as Povich recorded two strikeouts and forced a groundout.

Each team went down 1-2-3 in the fourth inning. In the fifth inning, NU added three runs to take a 7-2 lead. Banjoff smashed a solo home run before Chick tripled. Roseberry homered to bring in Chick before Stroh took to the mound and retired all three Shockers in the bottom of the fifth.

NU left two baserunners stranded in a scoreless top of the sixth. WSU scored one run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Husker lead to 7-3.

The Huskers went down in order in the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh, Wichita State scored two runs to trim the deficit to 7-5. In the top of the eighth, NU was retired in order again. Wichita State tacked on one run in the bottom of the eighth to make the score a 7-6 lead for the Big Red.

Drew Mackie singled in the top of the ninth, but remained stranded on third as each of the next three Husker batters produced outs. The Shockers managed two hits in the bottom of the ninth, but left both runners stranded.

Nebraska scored two runs in the top of the 10th to extend its lead to 9-6. Luke Boynton tripled in the leadoff spot and scored on a groundout. Schanaman singled and then scored on Hallmark's RBI single. In the bottom half, Bradford retired all three Shockers.

Mackie drew a leadoff walked, but a double play and groundout ended the top of the 11th. Wichita State managed a hit in the bottom of the 11th but couldn't cut the 9-6 deficit.

Boynton blistered a solo home run in the top of the 12th to extend NU's advantage to 10-6. In the bottom of the 12th, the Shockers scored two runs as each of the first four batters reached base. However, Wichita State left two runners stranded as back-to-back strikeouts ended the game.
