Big Red Set to Take on Panthers

The Nebraska swimming and diving team will be in action Saturday, Oct. 6, as the Huskers defend the Devaney Natatorium by taking on the Northern Iowa Panthers. The meet begins at 11 a.m.

The Huskers head into Saturday’s dual 1-0, coming off of a victory against South Dakota State. The Huskers started off strong sweeping the top three spots in the 200-yard medley relay, 50-yard freestyle,  200-yard freestyle, 1000-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley, one-meter dive and the three-meter dive.

The Big Red held their annual Scarlet vs. Cream Intrasquad meet, Oct. 5 at the Devaney Natatorium. Cream claimed the victory with a final score of 138-124.

This marks both Nebraska’s and Northern Iowa’s second competition of the season. The Panthers held their intrasquad dual on Sept. 29. The Panthers are led by Coach Nick Lakin, who was recently hired after serving as head coach and program director for the Black Hawk Area Swim Team since 2003.

Nebraska holds a 9-0 all-time series lead over Northern Iowa. The last dual meet between the two programs came a little less than a year ago, when Nebraska defeated Northern Iowa 154-86 in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Husker senior Kaylyn Flatt dominated the 2017-18 dual by claiming two victories in the 500-yard and 1,000-yard freestyles. Junior Tori Beeler each recorded a pair of individual victories for the Big Red, divers Abigail Knapton and Grace Tiernon fueled a dominant performance on the boards in the win.

Following Saturday’s meet, the Huskers will hit the road to face Iowa State on Oct. 26 in Ames, Iowa at 11 a.m. Nebraska will then return home for their dual competition against Kansas, Nov. 3 at 2 p.m.

Last Time Out: Cream Wins Intrasquad Meet

The Nebraska swim and dive team hosted their annual Scarlet and Cream Intrasquad Meet. The scarlet team started with 27 points and the cream team started with 38 points from their team-bonding activity. The cream topped the scarlet wtih a final score of 138-124.

The cream squad took first in the 200-yard medley relay with Autumn HaebigGwen WorltonDana Posthuma and Jessica Pentlarge in the lane.

In the 200-yard freestyle, senior captain Kaylyn Flatt took first for the scarlet followed by Haebig for the cream.

Tori Beeler put the scarlet on the board for first in the 200-yard IM and Alli Kopas came in second for the cream. 

The scarlet took first and second in the 50-yard freestyle with Lindsay Helferich and Clara Walstad in the lane, respectively. The cream followed with Allie Worrall in third. 

In the 100-yard butterfly, Posthuma took first for the cream and Murray came in second for the scarlet.

Kopas found a first place finish in the 100-yard freestyle, followed by Carla Gonzalez-Garcia.

Flatt earned her second first place finish of the day in the 500-yard freestyle and Rachel Powers followed for second.

In the 100-yard backstroke, Haebig came in first and McCafferty came in second.
