The Nebraska cross country team opened its season at the Augustana Twilight Friday night in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at Yankton Trail Park. The Husker men won the meet with a score of 34 points in the 7K, while the women finished second in the 5K with a score of 45 points. The Nebraska men have won the Augustana Twilight five of the last six seasons.
Mark Freyhof was the top finisher for the men with a second-place finish, clocking a time of 21.26.40. George Kusche crossed the finish line 0.42 seconds behind Freyhof and finished third (21.26.82). Bailey Timmons ran a time of 21:48.54 and placed sixth. Ryan Kennedy and Jordan De Spong both finished just outside the top 10 with times of 22:01.18 (11th) and 22:04.16 (12th), respectively.
Erika Freyhof led the women’s squad and placed second with a time of 17:18.76. Judi Jones ran a time of 17:27.56 and finished fourth. Rachel Brush was the third member of the Big Red to cross the finish line and clocked a time of 17:58.44 to place ninth. Elsa Forsberg and Grace Pagone also placed in the top 20 with times of 18:33.99 (18th) and 18:41.10 (20th), respectively. The top four finishers on the women’s team all ran personal bests in the 5K. South Dakota won the women's competition with 24 points.
The Huskers will return to action on Saturday, September 15th for the 29th annual Greeno/Dirksen Invitational. The meet will take place at Mahoney Golf Course in Lincoln.
