Huskers Shut Down Hoosiers in Series Opener

Lincoln, Neb. – Junior Matt Waldron recorded eight strikeouts in 7.0 innings to help Nebraska (23-24, 7-10 Big Ten) to a 5-2 series-opening win over Indiana at Hawks Field on Friday night.

Waldron, a right-hander who was making his 11th start of the season, matched his career high in strikeouts, which he set in his last outing on May 4 against Maryland. In the two outings before the Maryland game, he had seven strikeouts each time.

On Friday, Waldron allowed two runs on five hits before Reece Eddins threw 1.0 scoreless inning and Jake Hohensee earned his team-high 12th save with 1.0 scoreless inning.

Nebraska surrendered one run in the top of the first when Waldron walked in a run with the bases loaded. NU turned a double play in the following at-bat to end the inning.

In the bottom of the third, the Huskers took a 2-1 lead. Senior Scott Schreiber walked before Jesse Wilkening blasted his seventh home run of the season.

Indiana’s Logan Sowers homered in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 2-2. NU responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and never looked back. Mojo Hagge hit a two-out single and advanced to second on an error. Schreiber and Wilkening each walked to load the bases. Luke Roskam reached on a fielding error that would’ve ended the inning, but instead led to two runs for the Huskers.

Nebraska added one run in the bottom of the sixth when Angelo Altavilla homered to right field. It was his fourth home run of the season.

Indiana falls to 31-15 on the season with a 9-9 record in Big Ten play. The Huskers and Hoosiers continue their series on Saturday at 2:05 p.m. (CT).
