Lincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska baseball team (19-22) clinched a series victory by taking the second game against Nevada, 9-6, at Hawks Field on Friday night. The Huskers won the first game of the series on Thursday over the Wolf Pack by a 9-5 margin.
Junior Matt Waldron recorded seven strikeouts and no walks in 6.0 innings of work in his ninth start of the season. He allowed three runs on seven hits in earning his fifth win of 2018. Senior Matt Warren came in for 1.2 innings of relief before senior Jake Hohensee closed out the win with his team-high ninth save of the season.
Nebraska saw multi-hit performances from Jesse Wilkening (2-for-4), Brison Cronenbold (2-for-3) and Alex Henwood (2-for-3). The Huskers struck early with two runs in each of the first two innings. Mojo Hagge hit a leadoff double in the opening frame and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Wilkening laced an RBI double to bring in Hagge. Luke Roskam singled to advance Wilkening to third before Cronenbold’s RBI single drove him in.
Nevada tied the game at 2-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the second, but NU responded to take a 4-2 lead after the bottom of the second. Henwood reached on an error before Scott Schreiber smashed his team-high 15th home run of the season. The two-run shot puts Schreiber in a tie for sixth with Darin Erstad on NU’s career home runs list with 41.
In the fifth inning, Nevada scored one run in the top half of the frame before Nebraska scored three runs to extend its lead to 7-3. Cronenbold roped a leadoff double and advanced to third on a flyout in the following at-bat. Cronenbold scored when Ben Klenke reached on a fielder’s choice. Jaxon Hallmark walked before Henwood’s RBI single drove in Klenke. Hallmark scored on a wild pitch.
Hallmark blistered a two-out triple in the seventh and then scored on a wild pitch. Nevada answered with three runs in the top of the eighth to cut the lead to 8-6 before NU added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth.
Schreiber drew a leadoff walk before stealing second. After Wilkening was hit-by-pitch, a groundout advanced the runners to second and third. Cronenbold intentionally walked to load the bases. Mike Addante was walked to bring in one run before back-to-back outs ended the inning.
The Huskers and Wolf Pack conclude their three-game series on Saturday, starting at 12:05 p.m. (CT).
