Game Notes

Senior Austen Urness made her first start of the season against Wisconsin.

Austen Urness hit an RBI double on the first pitch of her first at bat of the season. It was her first hit since April 25, 2017, as she was injured through the first part of the season.

Kaylan Jablonski pitched a career-best nine strikeouts against the Badgers.

Nebraska had a season-best 1,151 fans in attendance at Friday's game.

Lincoln, Neb. -  The Nebraska softball team (30-18, 8-9 Big Ten) dropped game one of a three-game series to Wisconsin (23-19, 7-8 Big Ten) on Friday night by a score of 6-1.

Nebraska's lone run came from Taylor Otte, who scored off Austen Urness' double. Urness made her season debut against Wisconsin. She missed the first part of the season after suffering a knee injury last fall. Otte also had one hit - a double - for Nebraska, while Gina Metzler recorded the Huskers' third and final hit of the night.

Kaylan Jablonski dropped to 21-12 on the year. She pitched a complete seven-inning game. She gave up six runs on 11 hits. She also tied her career best with nine strikeouts.

Wisconsin's Haley Hestekin improved to 13-6, pitching 7.0 innings. She gave up one run on three hits and had four strikeouts.

Wisconsin took a 1-0 lead in the first. A leadoff single put a runner on base. She stole second and advanced to third on a Husker error. A double brought the runner home. With no outs and runners on the corners, things didn't look for Nebraska, but the Husker defense stepped it up. Nebraska got a pop up out that didn't advance the runners. Then, on a called double steal, Laura Barrow cut off the throw and threw back to Bri Cassidy, who tagged the runner at the plate. The Huskers got out of the jam with a groundout.

Nebraska tied it up in the bottom of the second. Otte hit a two-out double and Urness followed suit, doubling to score Otte and tie the game 1-1.

The Badgers took a 4-1 lead in the third with a three-run homer. In the bottom of the inning, Metzler hit a leadoff single and Simmons drew a walk. Barrow moved them both over with a sacrifice bunt to put two runners in scoring position. Jablonski drew a two-out walk to load the bases, but a pop up ended the inning.

In the seventh, UW hit a two-run homer to extend its lead to 6-1.

The Huskers and the Badgers will play game two of the series tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m. The game will be available on BTNPlus/FloSoftball (subscription required), as well as Huskers.com (radio).
