Bree Boruff made her fifth start of the season after getting the start at designated player on Sunday against the Gophers. Alyvia Simmons reached based as the leadoff batter each of the three games this weekend. She opened game one with a single, hit a triple to start game two and reached on an error to open today's game. Kaylan Jablonski hit her 10th home run of the season against Minnesota on Sunday. |
Minneapolis, Minn. - The Nebraska softball team (30-17, 8-8 Big Ten) fell to the Minnesota Golden Gophers (27-14, 10-3 Big Ten) by a score of 5-1 on Sunday afternoon.
As was the case all weekend, the Huskers couldn't crack Gopher pitcher Amber Fiser. NU got just three hits on the day. Kaylan Jablonski gave Nebraska a spark when she hit a solo homer in the second, but it would be the only run of the day for the Big Red. Laura Barrow and Taylor Otte also got one hit on the day. Fiser improved to 19-8. She pitched a complete seven innings and gave up just three hits and one earned run. She had seven strikeouts and one walk.
Jablonski pitched a complete six-innings in the circle. She gave up six hits and four earned runs. She also had two strikeouts and four walks.
In the first, Simmons reached first on an error, but would be the only baserunner of the inning for Nebraska, as the Gophers got two strikeouts and then caught Simmons as she tried to steal second. The Gophers took a 2-0 lead with a leadoff walk and a homer.
In the second, Jablonski hit a leadoff home run to get the Huskers on the board. In the bottom of the inning, Minnesota got a baserunner on second with a walk and a groundout. The next batter singled to the left side, but the throw to first was wild and allowed a run to score. Minnesota extended its lead to 3-1.
In the third, the Huskers went down in order. The Gophers scored two more with a single and a two-run home run.
In the fourth, Barrow hit a leadoff single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. She was left there though, as Minnesota retired the next three Husker batters. In the bottom of the inning, the Gophers put two runners on after a single and a batter was hit by a pitch. The Huskers came up with a big double play when Jablonski caught a line drive and threw to Barrow to get the runner at second out. Another hit batter put two runners on, but the Huskers got an out on the next play to get out of the inning without allowing a run.
In the fifth, both teams were retired in order.
Simmons drew a one-out walk in the sixth, but was out at second on the next play. Minnesota struck out the next batter to put the Husker defense back on the field. The Gophers loaded the bases with one out after a double and a pair of walks, but the Husker defense came in clutch. Madi Unzicker caught a hard-hit ball and tagged first, picking up the double play and getting the Huskers out of the inning.
In the seventh, Otte hit a two-out single up the middle to keep the Huskers' hopes alive, but a fly out ended the game.
The Huskers are back in action on April 27 when they host Wisconsin at 5 p.m. The game will be televised on BTN and will also be available on BTN2Go and the mobile app. Additionally, the game will be on Huskers.com (radio), courtesy of the IMG Husker Sports Network.
