The Huskers overcame a slugglish start with a solid second half in pulling away from Sacramento State, 83-61, on Sunday evening. Nebraska used a 10-2 run to break open a tie game and proceeded to outscore SSU, 47-28, in the final 20 minutes to win its 15th consecutive season opener.
The Huskers' starting backcourt of Tai Webster and Glynn Watson Jr. led the way for the Huskers, combining for 43 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists and just one turnover. Watson scored a career-high 23 points, including 17 in the first half, and added six assists, while Webster scored 18 of his 20 after halftime and added five rebounds.
Nebraska's returning players set the tone in the win, combining for 72 points and putting four players in double figures. Sophomore forwards Ed Morrow Jr. (15 points) and Jack McVeigh (14) joined the backcourt in giving the Huskers four players in double figures against Sacramento State.
Tuesday's game gives NU Head Coach Tim Miles an opportunity to face his alma mater as well as the place he began his coaching career. Miles, who was inducted into the school's hall of fame in 2007, played at Mary from 1985 to 1988 before becoming a student coach during his senior season. Mary, which went 19-14 in 2016-17, is 0-2 on the weekend following a 76-72 loss to Southwest Baptist on Saturday.

SCOUTING MARY
Under the direction of second-year coach Joe Kittell, Mary comes to Lincoln with an 0-2 record following losses to Lincoln (83-71) and Southwest Baptist (76-72) at the Southwest Baptist Tournament over the weekend. Kittell was a student assistant for Miles at North Dakota State from 2002 to 2006 and served as a video coordinator on his staff at Colorado State. Before taking the Mary job, he coached Lake Region State to a 42-20 record in his two seasons at the school.
The Marauders return a pair of starters and seven letterwinners from a team that went 19-12 and finished sixth in the Northern Sun Conference. Kittell's team saw its win total increase from nine in 2014-15 to 19 in his first season at the school. Bryan Jefferson was a first-team All-NSIC selection last year, averaging 15.7 points on 57 percent shooting and 6.6 rebounds per game. Senior forward Isaac Lindquist is the other returning starter, as he averaged 9.4 points and 4.6 rebounds a game last year.
SERIES HISTORY
Tuesday's game is the first meeting between the schools. It is the first time since the 2006-07 season that Nebraska has played a Division II team in a regular-season contest.
