Huskers Compete in Singles at Big Ten Tournament

Iowa City, Iowa - The Nebraska men's tennis team continued competition with the first day of singles play on Saturday at the Big Ten Indoors Tennis Tournament, hosted by the University of Iowa. 

NU will have a total of three players who will continue on in competition on Sunday. Those Huskers include No. 1 Dusty Boyer, No. 4 Toby Boyer and Marc Herrmann

In the first bracket on Saturday, Andrew Dzulynsky battled hard but fell to Northwestern's Jason Seidman, 6-4, 7-6 (2). Dzulynsky later went on to compete in a consolation match against Alex Kim of Michigan State, falling 6-4, 6-4. 

The No. 1 seed Dusty Boyer began his day of competition with a bye and then went on to compete against Christian Lutschaunig of Penn State. Boyer won the first set, 6-3, and edged Lutschaunig, 7-5, in the second set. Boyer will face Lefty Theodorou of Iowa on Sunday at 11 a.m.

In the second bracket, Bradford Zitsch defeated Michigan State's Alex Kim in a tough match. Kim won the first set 7-6 (4), but Zitsch refocused and came back to take the second and third sets by 6-4 scores. Zitsch moved on to play No. 5 David Kohan of Penn State-, losing 6-1 in the first set before falling in a tight second set, 7-5. Zitsch will play in a consolation match on Sunday against No. 12 Robin Haden of Iowa. 

Also competing in the second bracket, No. 4 Toby Boyer began with a bye and then competed against Stefan Lugonjic of Indiana. Boyer played competitive tennis, winning 7-5 in the first and 6-1 in the second set to earn the win. Boyer will compete on Sunday against Asher Hirsch of Illinois at 11 a.m. 

Scott Elsass competed in the third bracket against Jake Jocoby of Iowa with Jocoby taking the win 6-4, 6-4. Elsass later competed in a consolation match against Iowa's Nils Hallestrand and earned a 6-3, 5-7, 10-4 victory.

Herrmann competed in the fourth bracket against Iowa's Jonas Larsen, earning a 6-2, 6-3 win. Herrmann then competed against No. 10 Afonso Salgado of Indiana, producing an impressive 6-3, 6-1 victory over Salgado. Herrmann will compete on Sunday at 11 a.m against Davis Crocker of Michigan. 

Chris Schindler also competed in the fourth bracket against Tony Leto of Iowa. Leto pulled a win, 6-2, in the first set before edging Schindler, 7-5, in the second. Schindler later played in a consolation match against Jeremy Lynn of Minnesota where Lynn took the win 6-3, 7-6 (3).
