| Nebraska won its first non-conference road game of the season...the game was the Huskers' first extra-inning game of the year...Alicia Armstrong produced a career-high five RBIs...Kaylan Jablonski struck out a career-high nine batters, the most by a Husker hitter this season...MJ Knighten went 0-for-5 to see her hitting streak snapped at 21 games...the 21-game hitting streak was the third-longest in school history. |
Omaha, Neb. - Alicia Armstrong delivered a three-run triple in the top of the eighth inning to lift the Nebraska softball team to an 8-5 extra-inning victory over UNO Wednesday night in Omaha.
Armstrong's timely hit helped Nebraska escape with the win after the Huskers lost a 5-0 lead late. Armstrong finished 2-for-5 with a career-high five RBIs, as she also produced a two-run single in Nebraska's four-run fourth.
Nebraska grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Junior Mattie Fowler worked a leadoff walk, before freshman Kaylan Jablonski reached on an infield single. Both runners moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Kat Woolman. Then with two outs, junior Kiki Stokes beat out an infield single to plate Fowler with the game's first run.
The Huskers then took advantage of two UNO errors to take a 5-0 lead in the fourth. Fowler began the inning with a single before Jablonski walked. An error then loaded the bases before a second error allowed freshman pinch runner Taylor Otte to score and give Nebraska a 2-0 lead. With one out, Stokes delivered an RBI single to the wall in center to push the lead to 3-0. Armstrong then capped the inning with a two-out, two-run single to left.
With Jablonski dominant in the circle through the first five innings, it appeared the Huskers would cruise to the victory. But UNO answered in a big way in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five two-out runs to tie the game. With a runner on first and one out, Kelly Pattison bunted for a base hit after Nebraska failed to cover first base in time. That loomed large following a strikeout that could have been the third out. The Mavericks then got a two-out, two-run triple from Lizzie Noble followed by a game-tying three-run homer from Megan May.
That set the stage for Armstrong's big hit in the top of the eighth. With a win in their first extra-inning game of the season, the Huskers improved to 23-18 on the year. Junior right-hander Emily Lockman(13-11) earned the win, tossing 2.0 innings of scoreless, one-hit relief. Jablonski carried a shutout into the sixth inning but ended with a final line of five runs allowed in 6.0 innings with a career-high nine strikeouts.
Jaylee Hinrichs (11-9) took the loss for UNO, which fell to 20-21 on the year.
Following a seven-game road trip, the Huskers return home this weekend for a three-game series with Northwestern scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Bowlin Stadium.
