Iowa City, Iowa - Steph Pasquale homered, doubled twice and produced five RBIs to highlight a complete effort for the Nebraska softball team in a 12-2 six-inning victory at Iowa in the first game of a Wednesday doubleheader at Bob Pearl Field.
Offensively, Pasquale finished 3-for-4 with Nebraska career highs in runs (3), extra-base hits (3) and RBIs (5). Junior Kiki Stokes also finished 3-for-4, while sophomores Cassie McClure and Kat Woolman each produced a pair of RBIs. The Huskers pounded out 14 hits in the game, while scoring double-digit runs for the 13th time in 28 games this season.
Not to be outdone, junior right-hander Emily Lockman was outstanding in the circle. Lockman tossed her sixth complete game of the season, firing a four-hitter. She earned her 11th consecutive conference victory while improving to 9-7 on the year. She retired nine of the final 10 Hawkeyes.
The win was Nebraska's first road victory of the season, as the Huskers improved to 16-12 on the season and moved to 4-0 in Big Ten Conference play. NU has now won a league-best seven straight conference games dating back to 2014.
Ashley Yoways (2-9) took the loss for Iowa, which fell to 10-23 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
Nebraska jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Stokes began the game with a single, and she scored on a one-out double from classmate Alicia Armstrong. With two outs, Pasquale gave Nebraska a 2-0 lead with an RBI double down the right field line. Senior Kylee Muir then walked before Woolman laced a two-run double to the gap in right center to cap the four-run inning.
Iowa got a run back in the bottom of the first thanks to one single and three walks, including a bases-loaded walk to Alyssa Navarro.
The Huskers answered that run in the top of the second when Stokes tripled with one out and scored on an RBI single from sophomore MJ Knighten.
Nebraska missed a chance to add to their 5-1 lead in the top of the fourth. Junior Dawna Tyson began the inning with a double off the top of the wall in left field. Freshman Laura Barrow followed with a single, but Nebraska was unable to score, stranding a pair of runners in scoring position.
Iowa then cashed in a similar opportunity to trim the lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth. A leadoff double was followed by a single, before a one-out RBI groundout plated the Hawkeyes' second run.
The Huskers answered back in the top of the fifth. McClure singled to begin the frame before Pasquale blasted a two-run homer to right center to put Nebraska on top, 7-2.
NU then blew the game open with a five-run sixth inning. Stokes led off with a single before Knighten walked. Armstrong then reached on a fielder's choice, and the Hawkeyes were unable to get an out on the play as Stokes eluded a tag sliding into third. McClure then ripped a two-run double to left center before Pasquale added a two-run double of her own to stretch the lead to 11-2. Tyson then closed out the scoring with a sacrifice fly to left that scored Pasquale.
Lockman then worked around a two-out walk in the bottom of the sixth inning to wrap up the victory.
Nebraska and Iowa wrap up their doubleheader with game two.
