| Nebraska was held to a season-low two runs and five hits...Georgia Tech won its first game of the year to improve to 1-6. |
Tallahassee, Fla. - Nothing went right for the 19th-ranked Nebraska softball team on Friday, as the Huskers were run-ruled by Georgia Tech, 11-1 in five innings, at the Unconquered Invitational in Tallahassee, Fla.
The Husker pitching staff surrendered 10 walks and hit one batter, with six of those runners coming around to score. NU also gave up six extra-base hits, including a grand slam.
Offensively, Nebraska entered the game averaging 11.0 runs per game, and the Huskers had scored double-digit runs in four consecutive games for the first time in school history. But NU was stymied all afternoon by Georgia Tech's Emily Anderson, who fired a two-hitter and allowed just one run.
Freshman Laura Barrow was 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored, while junior Alicia Armstrong produced an RBI double and a walk and senior Kylee Muir scored Nebraska's other run.
Behind Anderson (1-2), the Yellow Jackets earned their first victory, improving to 1-6 on the year against a tough schedule. Nebraska fell to 4-2 with the loss. Sophomore right-hander Cassie McClure suffered the first loss of her career, falling to 3-1 this season. McClure earned the start and allowed five runs on six hits in 2.0 innings. McClure walked four and struck out two. Freshman Kaylan Jablonski came on in relief and tossed 2.0-plus innings, allowing six runs. Jablonski allowed only three hits, but surrendered six walks and hit a batter. Classmate Caitlin Bartsch relieved Jablonski and pitched well, retiring three of the four hitters she faced - including a pair of strikeouts - while not allowing a run in 1.0 inning of work.
Georgia Tech jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. A leadoff walk and back-to-back doubles led to the game's first run, before a two-out single and a wild pitch capped the three-run frame.
The Huskers got one run back in the bottom of the second. Muir began the inning with a leadoff single. The next two batters were then retired before junior Dawna Tyson drew a walk. Barrow then lined a two-out, RBI single to plate Muir and cut the deficit to 3-1.
The Yellow Jackets answered back, taking a 5-1 lead with two runs in the top of the third. The first run scored on an error and the second run came home on a sacrifice fly.
Georgia Tech then took a commanding 9-1 lead in the top of the fourth. The bases were full of Yellow Jackets with two outs following three walks before Kelsey Chisholm hit a grand slam.
The Yellow Jackets loaded the bases again in the top of the fifth on two more walks and a single that fell in center field after junior Kiki Stokes lost the ball in the sun. A two-run double pushed the lead to 11-1 before Bartsch retired the next three hitters to end the inning.
Nebraska found the scoreboard again in the bottom of the sixth. Barrow led off with a single - her second hit of the game - and advanced to second with one out. Barrow scored on an RBI double from Armstrong to cut the lead to 11-2. Sophomore MJ Knighten followed with a single to put runners at first and third, but the Huskers were unable to add another run.
Nebraska wraps up Friday action at the Unconquered Invitational against No. 6 Florida State.
