Lincoln - A pair of home runs and four errors doomed the Nebraska softball team in its final home game of the fall season Sunday, as the Huskers fell to UNO, 6-4.
UNO grabbed a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth inning with a pair of unearned runs. Nebraska came back to tie the game with a run in the bottom of the inning before taking the lead in the bottom of the fifth. But the Mavs answeres, scoring three runs on a pair of homers in the top of the sixth to take a 6-4 lead. Nebraska then loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth with no outs, but could not score in what proved to be the Huskers' final threat.
Junior right-hander Emily Lockman took the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) in a complete-game effort. The hits were tied at eight apiece, but the four Husker errors proved to be the difference.
Senior Kylee Muir had a pair of hits and two RBIs for the Huskers, while junior Dawna Tyson homered and classmate Kiki Stokes scored twice.
UNO took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. After the first two batters were retired, an infield single, a walk and a fly ball to shallow center that just avoided the glove of a diving Stokes plated the game's first run.
Nebraska answered back in the bottom of the third. Stokes led off with a single before freshman Gina Metzler followed with an infield single. Muir then scored Stokes with an RBI single through the left side. After a deep fly out to left, Tyson walked to load the bases with one out. Sophomore Kat Woolman then delivered an RBI single through the left side to score Metzler and give Nebraska a 2-1 lead.
In the top of the fourth, UNO loaded the bases with no outs on a pair of walks and a Husker error. Lockman then coaxed a pair of ground balls that the Huskers turned into force outs at home. Another ground ball appeared to get Lockman out of the inning, but a second error allowed the tying run to score. An infield single then gave UNO a 3-2 lead, before a fly out to center - the only ball the Mavs hit out of the infield in the inning - ended the inning.
The Huskers came back and tied the game in the bottom of the frame. Stokes was hit by a pitch and stole second before scoring on Muir's second RBI single of the day.
Nebraska then took a 4-3 lead when Tyson led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run off the scoreboard beyond the left field fence.
UNO answered in the top of the sixth when Campbell Ditto blasted a two-run homer to give the Mavs a 5-4 lead. Two batters later, Tonya Peterson launched a solo homer to right center to stretch the lead to two.
In the bottom of the frame, sophomore Rachel Arthur got things started with a single. Stokes then walked before Metzler reached on an error to load the bases with no outs. But the Huskers were unable to score. UNO recorded a force out at home before senior Steph Pasquale lined a 3-2 pitch directly to Megan May at first base, who turned the line drive into an inning-ending double play.
NU brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a UNO error but was unable to plate a run.
Nebraska wraps up its fall exhibition season next Sunday with a doubleheader at Creighton.
