Pole Vault Exhibition Saturday at Ed Weir Stadium

Members of the Nebraska track & field team will put on a pole vault exhibition at the Husker Nation Pavilion at Ed Weir Stadium from 5:30 to 7 p.m. before Saturday's night football game.

The Huskers have just begun training for the 2015 season, which starts with the Dec. 13 Intrasquad Meet at Devaney. Because of the limited amount of practice time so far, the pole vaulters will jump from about half of a normal run-up.

The men's and women's teams will have a friendly competition against each other with the men spotting the women a handicap of four feet. For example, a woman's jump of 12-6 would defeat a man's jump of 16-0.

"More than anything, it's a fun time for the athletes to put on a show for the crowd and get them close to the pit and the runway so fans can learn about the event and have a better appreciation for it," said pole vault coach T.J. Pierce.

The Husker men and women are coming off top-three finishes at both the Big Ten Indoor and Outdoor Championships last season. Lincoln Southwest graduate Christian Sanderfer was the runner-up in the pole vault at last year's Big Ten Indoor Championships with a jump of 17-1. Grand Island native Steven Cahoy jumped 17-8 1/2 at the Drake Relays last year, the sixth-best mark in school history. On the women's side, Paula Andrie recorded three first-place finishes last season and was fifth at the Big Ten Indoor Championships with a mark of 13-3 1/2.

The following Huskers will be jumping on Saturday: Paula Andrie, Melanie Blum, Karlye Cygan, Allexis Menghini, Tess Merrill; Brandon Benson, Steven Cahoy, Jed Fenske, Tyler Loontjer, Christian Sanderfer, Beau Simmons.
