Grizzle Leads Huskers at Iowa State Classic

Ames, Iowa- While most of the Nebraska track and field team was at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas on Friday, a select group of Huskers competed at the Iowa State Classic at the Leid Recreation Center in Ames, Iowa.

Veronica Grizzle kicked things off for the Huskers with a second-place finish in the women’s weight throw. She posted a personal-best mark of 65-6 ¾ (19.98). With that throw, she moves to third all-time at Nebraska and stays at fourth in the Big Ten.

Ellie Grooters finished third in the women’s 600-yard run. She posted a personal-best time of 1:20.52. Morgan Woitzel finished ninth with a time of 1:23.35.

Oladapo Akinmoladun posted the top preliminary time in the men’s 60-meter hurdles with a mark of 8.00 to advance to tomorrow’s final. Also advancing was Sean Pille (8.19) and Tibor Koroknai (8.25) as they finished sixth and seventh, respectively. In the women’s 60-meter hurdles, Melissa-Maree Farrington qualified for Saturday’s final as she posted a preliminary time of 8.71.

In the preliminaries of the men’s 60 meters, John Welk finished with a time of 6.97, while Zach Birkel posted a time of 7.16. Both missed qualifying for tomorrow’s finals. Mila Andric tallied a time of 25.48 in the 200 meters, while Birkel notched a time of 22.31 for the men.

Tyler Wullenwaber tallied a leap of 22-0 ¾ (6.72) in the men’s long jump, while Farrington posted a jump of 5-3 (1.60) in the women’s high jump. Jake Pinion finished with a throw of 54-11 ¼ (16.74) in the weight throw.

The Huskers return to action tomorrow for another full day at the Iowa State Classic. The action is set to begin at 10 a.m.
