Huskers Take Game One From Bluejays

Lincoln - Tatum Edwards threw a three-hit shutout and the Husker offense produced 10 hits, as the Nebraska softball team opened a Sunday doubleheader against Creighton with a 6-0 win in game one at Bowlin Stadium.

In tossing her third shutout in four fall starts, Edwards was dominant in the circle. Creighton got just one base runner past first base in the game, and Edwards allowed only two base runners after the first. She also struck out 10 while walking only one.

With Edwards in control in the circle, Nebraska's offense plated six runs on 10 hits. Sophomore Hailey Decker was 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored, as she is now 16-for-23 in seven fall games against Division I opponents. Senior Taylor Edwards also produced three hits, while sophomore Dawna Tyson produced a game-high two RBIs.

Nebraska missed a good scoring chance in the bottom of the second. Decker began the inning with a single before senior Kylee Muir drew a four-pitch walk. Following an out, junior Mattie Fowler singled up the middle. Decker was held at third as Muir rounded second base and Creighton was able to throw behind Muir and eventually tag her out after a brief rundown. A strikeout then ended the threat.

Then in the fourth, Taylor Edwards reach on an infield single to begin the inning before Decker doubled to fence in left to put runners at first and second out. Muir then walked for the second time to load the bases with no outs. Tyson then scored Edwards with a ground ball to the shortstop and on the play, freshman pinch runner Lotte Sjulin was safe at second thanks to a Creighton error. Freshman Kat Woolman gave Nebraska a 2-0 lead with a terrific at bat. After falling behind 0-2, Woolman fouled off three two-strike pitches to work the count full, before lining an RBI single to left that scored Decker. Then with two outs, Tatum Edwards drew a bases-loaded walk to score freshman pinch runner Rachel Arthur and give Nebraska a 3-0 lead.

The Huskers added to their lead in the fifth. Taylor Edwards began the inning with a single before Decker walked. Muir then grounded an RBI double just fair down the right field line, scoring Edwards. Tyson followed with a fly ball to center field that was deep enough to score Decker, but on the play, the center fielder dropped the ball, allowing Muir to move up to third and Tyson to wind up at second base. Leading 5-0, Fowler scored Muir with an RBI ground out. 

Creighton managed just two singles over the final six innings against Edwards, and one of those singles was erased on a double play.

The Huskers wrap up their eight-game fall exhibition season with game two against the Bluejays.
