Huskers Rally Past Drake in Game One

Lincoln - After being held scoreless through the first six innings, the Nebraska softball team scored three times with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning and rallied to defeat Drake, 3-2, in the first game of a Friday night doubleheader at Bowlin Stadium.

Trailing 3-2, Nebraska loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh on an error, a single from sophmore Dawna Tyson and a walk to senior Tatum Edwards. After an out, senior Taylor Edwards quickly fell behind in the count 0-2 before working a walk to bring home freshman pinch runner Lotte Sjulin. Sophomore Hailey Decker then lined the next pitch into right field and freshman pinch runner Rachel Arthur scored the tying run, while Tatum Edwards avoided the tag at home to plate the winning run.

Tatum Edwards also earned the win in the circle, despite allowing her first earned run in three complete games this fall. Only one of the two runs Edwards allowed was earned, while she tossed a four-hitter. She added eight strikeouts, while working around six walks.

Drake jumped out to a 1-0 lead thanks to a Husker error. A leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt gave the Bulldogs a runner at second with one out. Following a ground out, Schmidt lined a hard single to right field and Laura Brewer scored when the ball kicked away from freshman right fielder Kat Woolman.

After stranding a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the second, Nebraska missed another scoring chance in the bottom of the third. Sophomore Dawna Tyson began the inning with a single before classmate Kiki Stokes put down a sacrifice bunt and wound up safe at first on an error. The Huskers had runners at second and third with one out following a sacrifice bunt from Tatum Edwards, but a strikeout and a line out ended the threat.

A single and a pair of walks gave Drake the bases loaded with one out in the top of the fourth. After a strikeout, a third walk of the frame forced in a run as the Bulldogs grabbed a 2-0 lead.

Two more walks gave Drake a chance to add to its lead with runners on first and second with one out in the top of the seventh. But Edwards escaped the jam without any damage by coaxing a pop out and a ground out, following a two-out infield single.

Holding the Bulldogs scoreless in the top of the seventh proved key to Nebraska's comeback. Tyson ignited the comeback with her one-out single, as she finished with two of Nebraska's four hits in the game. Two of those four hits came in the seventh inning.
