Tatum Edwards Pitches Huskers Past UNO

Lincoln - Behind a second straight shutout from Tatum Edwards, the Nebraska softball team capped a 3-1 weekend at the Big Red Fall Classic with a 1-0 victory over UNO on Sunday at Bowlin Stadium.

Edwards, a senior right-hander, fired a five-hitter and allowed only one UNO baserunner to advance past second base. She added xx strikeouts in the victory after scattering seven hits in a shutout victory over Colorado State on Saturday in her only other appearance of the weekend. Overall, the Huskers shut out three of their four opponents at the Big Red Fall Classic.

Nebraska got a controversial run in the top of the second to give Edwards the only run of support she would need. Freshman Kat Woolman reached on a one-out single, advanced to second on a ground out and was at third base with two outs following a passed ball. Classmate Austen Urness then drew a walk and stole second to put a pair of runners in scoring position. Sophomore Kiki Stokes followed with a ground ball to first base that was bobbled and knocked into foul territory by UNO first baseman Amber Lutmer. With her foot on the bag, Lutmer attempted to pick up the ball before Stokes made it to the base. Stokes was initially ruled out but after a conference by the umpires, it was determined that Lutmer did not have control of the ball before Stokes touched the base and she was ruled safe on the run-scoring error.

Edwards came right back and struck out the side in the top of the third after her offense gave her a run in the bottom of the second. UNO then mounted its first scoring chance in the top of the fourth. A one-out walk and single gave the Mavs their first runner in scoring position. A ground out then move the runners to second and third before another ground out ended the inning.

UNO again had a pair of base runners in the top of the fifth inning before Edwards bounced back and struck out the next two hitters. She then worked around a two-out walk in the top of the sixth.

After a controversial double steal attempt ended with sophomore Hailey Decker being thrown out at home to end the bottom of the sixth inning, Edwards retired the Mavericks in order in the top of the seventh on just six pitches to wrap up the victory.

Nebraska's offense was held to four hits and just one run against UNO ace Dana Elsasser, who did not allow an earned run in a complete-game, five-hitter. Sophomore Hailey Decker had two of Nebraska's five hits. Decker went 4-for-7 in Sunday's two games and finished the weekend 8-for-14 (.571). Woolman added a hit against UNO as part of a 1-for-3 effort, and she finished the weekend 6-for-11 (.545).

The Huskers continue their eight-game fall season next Friday with a doubleheader against Drake at Bowlin Stadium. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. and admission is free.
