Rams Rally Past Huskers

Lincoln - The Nebraska softball team jumped out to a 5-0 lead against Colorado State on Sunday at the Big Red Fall Classic only to the see the Rams rally to score 10 straight runs in a 10-8 victory.

Nebraska struck first with a five-run second inning, but Colorado State scored six times with two outs in the fifth inning to take a one-run lead. The Rams then produced a four-run seventh inning to seal the game, as a Husker seventh-inning rally that brought the tying run to the plate came up short.

Sophomore right-hander Emily Lockman took the loss after posting a shutout on Saturday against UNO. Lockman allowed 10 runs (seven earned) on 12 hits in 6.0-plus innings.

Nebraska jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Freshman Kat Woolman began the frame with a double to left center, before junior Mattie Fowler followed with a single. With runners on first and third, freshman Austen Urness delivered an RBI single just fair down the left field line. Sophomore Dawna Tyson then made it 2-0 when she lined the next pitch into center field for an RBI single. Classmate Kiki Stokes made it three straight RBI singles with a hard-hit grounder up the middle. The Huskers then had runners on second and third with two outs, before both runners scored on a wild pitch and a throwing error to cap the five-run inning.

Colorado State answered with six two-out runs in the top of the fifth. With runners on second and third, Taylor Hutton hit a ground ball up the middle that just eluded a diving Fowler and rolled all the way to the wall for a two-out, two-run triple. Haley Hutton then followed with an RBI single that cut the Husker lead to 5-3. After a hit batter, Ashlie Ortega hit another well-placed single up the middle that trimmed the lead to one. A blooper to shallow left off the bat of Danielle Wikre then fell for a two-run single to put Colorado State on top 6-5, before Wikre was thrown out attempting to stretch the single into a double.

The Rams added to their lead in the top of the seventh. A pair of infield singles and an error loaded the bases with no outs. An RBI single and another Husker error gave Colorado State an 8-5 lead and the Rams still had the bases loaded with no outs when sophomore right-hander Danica Bishop relieved Lockman. Bishop recorded a pop out for the first out before an RBI single to center and a passed ball alowed two more Rams to score. Bishop then retired the next two hitters as she was not charged with a run in her 1.0 inning of work, allowing only a pair of inherited runners to score, both of which were unearned and charged to Lockman.

In the bottom of the seventh, senior Taylor Edwards was hit by a one-out pitch and scored when Decker doubled off the wall in center. Decker then moved to third on a wild pitch before senior Kylee Muir followed with another double to left center that scored Decker and cut the lead to 10-7. Kat Woolman then reached on an error to bring the tying run to the plate. A wild pitch then scored Muir with the Huskers' third run of the inning, as they trimmed the lead to 10-8. A ground out marked the second out of the inning before a strikeout ended the comeback attempt.

Stokes paced Nebraska's offense with a 2-for-2 day that included a walk, a triple, a run and an RBI. Decker and Muir also produced two hits, including a double and an RBI for each player. Overall, eight Huskers had a hit in the game, as NU produced 11 hits in the loss.

The Huskers wrap up the Big Red Fall Classic later on Saturday with a contest against UNO.
