Huskers Open Fall With 2-0 Victory

Lincoln - Senior right-hander Tatum Edwards tossed a shutout and freshman MJ Knighten produced the game's only runs as the Nebraska softball team opened its fall exhibition season with a 2-0 victory over Colorado State at Bowlin Stadium on Saturday.

Edwards, a 2012 second-team All-American, scattered eight hits and worked around four walks as the Rams stranded 11 baserunners. Nebraska stranded just four runners, as the Huskers were held to only three hits, while working six walks. One of NU's three hits was a clutch two-out, two-run single from Knighten in the top of the fourth inning.

After a pair of double plays in the first three innings squashed two Nebraska scoring chances, Colorado State popped into a double play with runners on first and second and no outs in the bottom of the third.

Nebraska threatened again in the top of the fourth and avoided the double play this time. Senior Kylee Muir began the inning with a single before sophomore Dawna Tyson walked. Freshman Austen Urness then moved both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Following a lineout, Knighten produced her two-run single to center to give the Huskers a 2-0 lead.

Tatum Edwards then escaped a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the frame to preserve the lead. The Rams stranded two more runners in scoring position in the fifth, before Edwards retired the side in order in the sixth. She then wrapped up the victory by working around a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh.

Molly Randle threw a three-hitter for Colorado State, but took the loss after allowing a pair of earned runs.

The Huskers wrap up their participation in day one of the Big Red Fall Classic with an in-state matchup against UNO.
