No. 10 Huskers Fall Against Oklahoma

Lincoln, Neb. - The No. 10 Nebraska men's gymnastics team struggled against the No. 3 Oklahoma Sooners Sunday afternoon, falling with a team total of 435.850-426.350. Despite the loss, NU earned its highest team score of the season, beating their previous high of 425.400, which they set in Iowa on Feb. 23.

Both teams faced the new five up-five count rule, which came into effect on March 1. The rule changed the event layouts to five gymnasts per team, putting all five into the team's overall score.

The Huskers started the afternoon on floor exercise, where they struggled under the added pressure of the new NCAA rule. Freshman Sam Chamberlain started Nebraska off on a high note, earning a 14.20 on his second competitive floor routine in college competition. Sophomore Louis Klein posted NU's highest score of the meet on floor with a 15.00. He finished in second overall on the event, just below Oklahoma's Alec Robin who earned a 15.20.

Nebraska then moved to pommel horse for their second rotation. Junior all-arounder CJ Schaaf earned a new personal best on the event, earning a 14.05. Schaaf's teammate Eric Schryver performed the best routine of the meet on the aparatus, grabbing a 14.95 and the individual event title. 

NU earned its best score of the season on their third rotation, rings. Putting together a team score of 71.400, the Huskers gained some momentum as more than half of their five competitors ended their routines with stuck dismounts. All three of Nebraska's rings specialists earned scores of 14.20 or better. Junior Donovan Arndt led the team with a score of 14.90, a new personal best for him.

The Huskers began the second half of the meet 5.1 points behind the Sooners. The team moved to vault, where all five competitors posted 14.35 or better vaults. Nebraska finished out the event with a team score of 72.950, beating out the Sooners on the event by 0.95 points.

Nebraska posted consistent marks on parallel bars, earning them a new team high score of 72.300 on the event for 2013. Schaaf led the Huskers on the aparatus, posting a solid 14.70 as the second competitor. He earned the individual event title on the event. Chamberlain, Schryver and junior Mark Ringle all tied for second overall, scoring 14.60's across the board.

NU finished up the meet on high bar. The Huskers started the rotation off slow, seeing a 13.45 for Schaaf and a 12.90 for junior Micah Christensen. Klein re-energized the crowd as the third Husker on the event. His strong routine and stuck dismount earned a 14.45, the highest score Nebraska saw on the event. Ringle and Schryver finished out the meet, both scoring above a 14.00.

Schaaf finished the day with a new personal best in the all-around. He earned an 83.900, 0.30 better than his previous record-breaking score set at Iowa.

The Huskers will see another weekend off before hosting their last meet of the season on March 16. Senior night will feature a Big Ten triangular with the No. 6 Minnesota Golden Gophers and the No. 8 Iowa Hawkeyes. The meet will be held in the Devaney Center track facilities at 7 p.m. CST.
