Griva Captures Husker Invite Title

Lincoln, Neb. - The Nebraska Track and Field team opened the 37th Annual Frank Sevigne Invitational on Friday night at the Devaney Center Indoor Track with solid outings in the combined events and a win in the women's long jump.

Ā Anne Martin and Jordan Stiens started the weekend off for the Huskers with a second and third-place finish, respectively, in the pentathlon. Martin posted a personal-best score of 3,865 while Stiens recorded a personal-best score of 3,791. Martin recorded personal bests in the 60-meter hurdles (8.93), shot put (36-1 1/2) and 800 meters (2:24.19). Stiens posted personal bests in the 60-meter hurdles (8.74), high jump (5-2 1/4), shot put (39-2 1/2), long jump (18-1 1/2) and 800 meters (2:25.54). Wisconsin's Dorcas Akinniyi won the women's pentathlon (3,991).

Mara Griva took home the long jump title on Friday night, recording a season-best jump of 20-3 1/2 (6.18). Chris Phipps finished third in the long jump with a mark of 24-2 1/2 (7.38). Clive Chafausipo of Oral Roberts finished first (24-11 3/4) and former Husker All-American Nicholas Gordon finished second (24-8 1/2).

Nate Polacek took second in the men's pole vault with a mark of 17-2 3/4 (5.25). Jay Kilpatrick finished seventh with a vault of 15-9 (4.80).

Victoria Zimmerman came in second in the women's weight throw with a mark of 61-5 3/4 (18.74). Wisconsin's Taylor Smith took first, posting a throw of 66-1 1/2 (20.15), and Taylor Jensen finished with a mark of 56-6 (17.22).

Bjorn Barrefors finished the day in the men's heptathlon with 3,225 points and in second place behind Wisconsin's Japheth Cato (3,247). Teran Walford finished day one with 2,685 points and a personal-best mark in the high jump (6-2). Barrefors, Walford and the rest of the field will finish the heptathlon tomorrow with the 60-hurdles, pole vault and 1,000 meters.

The Huskers will be back at the Devaney Center tomorrow for the second day of the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational starting at 10 a.m. with the men's heptathlon 60 hurdles. The field and running events will start at noon with the women's shot put and mile.
