Las Cruces, N.M. - Scott Willman fired a 1-under-par 70 in the final round of the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate on Tuesday, guiding the Nebraska men's golf team to a 12th-place finish.
The Huskers, playing in their fifth and final tournament of the fall season, posted 287 in the final round. The score marked the Nebraska's best third-round score of the fall campaign. NU's 54-hole total was 884, which was three strokes shy of its best this season. The 12th-place finish marked the Huskers' fourth straight 12th-place result after winning the season-opening Fairway Club Invitational.
Willman earned his fifth straight top-20 result with a tie for 14th, leading the Huskers. The senior recorded his sixth subpar round of the season along with his opening-round 70 on Monday. His 212 total finished 13 strokes off the pace.
Neil Dufford carded his best round of the tournament on Tuesday, shooting an even-par 71 at NMSU Golf Course. That score marked his lowest of the season as Dufford tie for 57th. The junior carded rounds of 75 and 79 on Monday for his 225 total after 54 holes.
Tying for 59th was Manuel Lavin. Lavin posted 73 in the final round for a 226 total. The sophomore, who competed in every tournament for the Huskers during the fall campaign, had rounds of 77 and 76 in the first 36 holes.
Kevin Gillick and Ross Dickson tied for 65th at 227 strokes. Gillick posted 77 in the final round and Dickson recorded 73. Gillick shot 74 and 76 on Monday, while Dickson turned in rounds of 76 and 78.
UNLV won the team competition by eight strokes over Wichita State. Leading the way individually was Hunter Sparks of Wichita State, who shot 199 over 54 holes. His final-round 66 helped him edge Justin Shin of New Mexico State by two strokes.
The Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate was the Huskers' final event of the fall campaign. Nebraska will tee off its spring season on Feb. 10-11 at the Big Ten Match Play in Bradenton, Fla.
