Las Cruces, N.M. - Scott Willman shot 142 through the first two rounds of the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate at NMSU Golf Course, leading the 13th-place Nebraska men's golf team on Monday.
The Huskers opened with 295 at the par-71, 7,074-yard layout, before posting 302 in the second round, putting their 36-hole total at 597. The first-round 295 total marks the first time this season in five events that the Huskers have broken 300. NU is six strokes away from the top-10 with 18 holes to play.
Willman is tied for 17th after a first-round 1-under-par 70 and a second-round 1-over-par 72. Willman's 70 in the opening round marks his fifth subpar round of the season. The senior is seeking his fifth consecutive top-20 finish to start the 2011-12 campaign. Willman also has a chance to record the best Husker finish for the fourth straight tournament.
Kevin Gillick is tied for 53rd after firing 150 on the first day. Gillick carded rounds of 74 and 76 on Monday and has a chance to earn his best finish as a Husker in four appearances. The junior's best finish currently is a tie for 52nd as an individual at the Kansas Invitational.
Manuel Lavin posted 77 and 76 in the opening 36 holes at NMSU Golf Course and sits in a tie for 66th. His two-round total is 153. Meanwhile, Neil Dufford and Ross Dickson are tied for 72nd after shooting 154 on Monday. Dufford recorded a first-round 75 before a second-round 79. Dickson posted 76 and 78.
UNLV is leading the team competition by 11 strokes with a 543 total through 36 holes. Leading the Rebels as well as the tournament is Nicholas Maruri, who fired back-to-back 66s for a 10-under-par total. Wichita State's Hunter Sparks and New Mexico State's Justin Shin are tied for second at 9-under-par.
