Las Cruces, N.M. - The Nebraska men's golf team will play in its final event of the fall campaign when the Huskers tee it up at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday.
The Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate will be the Huskers' fifth tournament of the 2011-12 campaign. Nebraska's most recent tournament came two weeks ago when the Huskers finished 12th at the Firestone Invitational. NU posted its best 54-hole total (881) and Scott Willman led the Huskers in a tie for 12th in Akron, Ohio. The Huskers also finished 12th in each of their previous two tournaments, the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate and the Kansas Invitational. The Huskers won their season-opening tournament, the Fairway Club Invitational.
The Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate will be contested at New Mexico State University Golf Course, a par-72, 7,014-yard layout. Play will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. (Central Time) on Monday. The first 36 holes will be contested on Monday, with the final 18 being played on Tuesday. Tuesday's final round begins with a 9 a.m. shotgun.
The Huskers will use the same lineup as the last two tournaments, with Willman, Neil Dufford, Manuel Lavin, Kevin Gillick and Ross Dickson earning spots. Willman will represent the No. 1 spot in the lineup. The senior, who is averaging 73.42 strokes per round, has finished in the top-20 in each of his first four starts.
Dufford will be No. 2 for the Huskers. The junior has started every event for NU during the fall 2011 campaign and has a 76.08 stroke average, which is third on the team. Lavin is No. 3 in the NU lineup and has produced a 74.42 stroke average through four tournaments. His best finish was second place at the Fairway Club Invitational.
Gillick will represent the No. 4 position, making his third start as a member of the Husker lineup. His stroke average is 78.00 and his best finish is a tie for 52nd at the Kansas Invitational. Dickson will round out the Husker lineup, playing as the No. 5. The freshman's stroke average is 78.08 and his best finish is a tie for 55th at the Fairway Club Invitational.
