Willman Leads Huskers to 12th Place Finish

Normal, Ill. - Scott Willman fired a final-round 70 at the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate on Sunday to help the Nebraska men's golf team finish 12th with a three-round total of 913.

The Huskers, who entered Sunday's final round in 13th place after Saturday's first and second rounds, shot 292 in the final round, bettering their 320 and 301 totals from day one. Only three of the 15 teams competing scored better than the Huskers in the final round. The 292 total also tied the Huskers' best round of the season.

Willman finished 16th with a three-round total of 222 following his final-round, one-under-par 70. He finished 19 strokes behind individual champion Luke Guthrie from Illinois, who finished with a 203. Willman's 70 was the best round by a Husker in the 54-hole tournament. He carded five birdies and four bogeys on Sunday.

Manuel Lavin posted an even-par 71 in the final round, bettering his 81 and 78 on Saturday. Lavin's 230 stroke total put him in a tie for 48th. Lavin had three birdies on the front nine to fire a three-under-par 33, but scored three bogeys on the back nine for a three-over 38.

Neil Dufford and Ross Dickson tied for 57th, as each golfer finished at 232 over three rounds. Dufford produced a 76 in the final round, while Dickson added a 75 to the Husker total. Dufford carded two birdies on the day and Dickson had three birdies.

Kevin Gillick finished 62nd (233) after a final-round 76. Gillick, playing in his first tournament as a member of the Husker lineup, managed two birdies on Sunday.

Illinois won the team title by 23 strokes over Akron, finishing with an 852 total. The Fighting Illini were led by individual medalist Luke Guthrie, who shot 203 for the tournament. He finished four strokes ahead of teammate Thomas Pieters.

The Huskers return to the course Oct. 10-11, when they travel to Akron, Ohio for the Firestone Invitational.
