Davis Earns Top-Three Finish, Huskers Close 2011 Season

Cleveland, Ohio - The Huskers saw six individuals compete at the NCAA Women's Gymnastics Event Finals at the Wolstein Center on Sunday afternoon bringing the 2011 Nebraska women's gymnastics season to a close. The day was highlighted with a third-place finish from senior Erin Davis on vault, the best of her career at the NCAA Championships.

Daviscompeted on two events for the Huskers on Sunday. In the vault finals she averaged a 9.8188 between her two vaults to put her in third-place and earn a spot in the Husker record books. The two-time Big 12 and two-time NCAA Regional Vault Champion, Davis held the No. 1 spot on the event throughout much of the season. She had totaled eight individual vault titles on the year, including a perfect 10.0 against Arizona State –the second such score of her career. Emily Parsons was the last Husker to place in the top five on vault in event finals, tallying a 9.85 on the event for third in 2007.

In the final routine of her Husker career and as the second competitor to perform on floor, Davis posted a 9.775 for 12th-place. She tallied two first-team All-America honors at the 2011 NCAA Championships, posting a 9.95 on vault and a 9.90 on floor at Friday’s semifinal competition.

Junior Lora Evenstad, whobecame a two-time All-American at the 2011 NCAA Championships with her first-team selection on floor, was the first competitor of the afternoon on the event and tallied a 9.7875 for 11th. The 2011 NCAA Corvallis Regional Floor Champion, she had captured nine floor crowns on the season. 

Sophomore Janelle Giblin started the day on vault as the first competitor to perform. She averaged a 9.80 on her two vaults to put her in a tie for fifth place. Giblin earned first-team All-America honors on vault (9.90) and second-team All-America accolades in the all-around (39.25) at the semifinal session on Friday evening, making her a three-time All-American for the Huskers.

Senior Maria Scaffidi ended her Husker career by competing at the event finals for the first time, placing 10th with a score of 9.825. Scaffidi earned the first All-America awards of her career on Friday, notching a 9.90 on bars. She had earned five bars titles on the season.

Freshman Jamie Schleppenbach averaged a 9.7375 on her two vaults during event finals competition putting her in 12th. She earned the first All-America awards of her career on Friday, hitting a 9.90 on vault in the semifinal session. She also posted a season-high-tying 9.95 on the event on Saturday at the Super Six Team Finals.

Freshman Emily Wong made her event finals debut with a mark of 9.8125 on bars to place 11th. Wong hit a score of 9.90 on bars at the semifinal session on Friday and notched first-team All-America status on the event.

Fourth-ranked Nebraska finished the year with a 22-12 record, and nine Huskers – Davis, Giblin, Schleppenbach, Wong, Scaffidi, Evenstad, seniors Maddie Steinauer and Brittnee Habbib, and sophomore Brittany Skinner - took home 11 first- or second-team All-America awards. With their fourth-place finish, the Huskers matched their best finish at the NCAA Championships in school history.
