Adams Breaks NU Distance Record

Fayetteville, Ark. - Being on the road for the first time this season was no problem for the Nebraska track and field team, as the squad left the Razorback Invitational with three meet titles and senior David Adams set the school record in the 3,000 meters.

Already the NU record holder in the indoor 5,000 meters, Adams re-wrote the NU record book once again with a time of 7:58.62 in the 3,000 meters. The time broke Jacques van Rensburg's 1990 record of 8:03.70 and marked the first time in school history that a runner has run below eight minutes in the 3,000 meters indoors, including oversized tracks. Even though Adams finished fourth in the race, his time ranks sixth on the NCAA list this season.

"It was a great race from the gun and it helped that everyone in the lead pack wanted to run fast," Adams said. "I had a bit of a hiccup half-way through the race, but with about 800 (meters) left the switch turned on and I turned it on."

"Coming in as a freshman I never thought I would own two school records," Adams said. "I've been blessed here, as I've had some great opportunities to run on fast tracks and at good meets."

After Luke Pinkelman won the men's shot put last night, Victoria Zimmerman added another title for the Husker throwers with a win in the women's weight throw. Zimmerman tossed a personal best of 61-7 last weekend at the adidas Classic and nearly matched the mark on Saturday with a throw of 61-2. Two other Huskers joined Zimmerman in the top five, as Jade Siegel finished fourth with a personal best of 57-5 ¾ and Samantha Musil was next in fifth with a personal best of 56-11 ¼.

Natalie Willer matched her season best in the pole vault with a third-place jump of 14-1 ¼. Willer and Stanford's Katherina Stefanidi both cleared the same height, but Stefanidi took second on less misses. The Husker senior previously hit the mark at the Holiday Inn Invitational, which automatically qualified her for the NCAA Indoor Championships.

Junior Chris Phipps showed no signs of rust in his first triple jump competition of the season, as he took sixth with a leap of 51-10, which was just shy of his PR of 51-11 ¾. On Friday night, Phipps was one of three Husker long jumpers to record a season best with his fourth-place leap of 25-3 ½.

In the middle distance races, Tommy Brinn and Ashley Miller each recorded personal best. Brinn cut nearly two seconds off his previous best of 1:52.06 in the 800 meters with a time of 1:50.34, while Miller cut over nine seconds of her mile best of 4:58.82 with a time of 4:49.68.

The men's 4x400-meter relay concluded the meet with a season-best time of 3:11.61. Miles Ukaoma, Brinn, Eric Lund and Blaise Rewaka combined to take sixth out of 13 teams.

The Huskers will be back at home next weekend for the 36th Annual Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational. One of the premier meets of the indoor season, competition will start at Noon on both Friday and Saturday. Tickets to the two-day meet are available at Huskers.com, by calling 1-800-8BIGRED or by stopping by the Nebraska Athletic Ticket Office.
