Nebraska Postgame Notes vs. Kansas State

#7 Nebraska 48, Kansas State 13
Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010
Manhattan, Kan. (Bill Snyder Family Stadium)

- Nebraska improved to 5-0 with tonight's victory, marking the Huskers' first 5-0 start since 2003. The win was also Nebraska's sixth straight over Kansas State. Nebraska improved to 6-0 in Thursday night ESPN games.

- Nebraska won its sixth straight road game, NU's longest road winning streak since winning 10 straight road games from 1996 to 1998. Nebraska has also won six straight road games in the Big 12 Conference, all by at least eight points. That streak is the longest for NU since an eight-game streak in 1996 and 1997. Nebraska is 7-2 on the road in Big 12 play under Bo Pelini.

- Nebraska has won 11 of its past 12 games overall, its best stretch since winning 13 straight games between the 2000 and 2001 seasons.

- Nebraska allowed just 13 points in tonight's game, marking the 13th straight Nebraska opponent to score 21 or fewer points, the second-longest streak in the nation.

- Nebraska scored a touchdown on its opening possession, the fourth time in five games this season NU has scored on its initial possession (3 TD, 1 FG). NU's score came at the 6:22 mark in the first quarter. The Huskers have now scored in the first nine minutes of the game in six of their last seven contests away from Lincoln, including five times in the first four minutes. Nebraska has outscored its opponents, 38-7, in the first quarter in 2010, and NU has either led or been tied after the first quarter in 13 straight games.

- Nebraska redshirt freshman quarterback Taylor Martinez carried the ball 15 times for 241 yards tonight, including a 14-yard touchdown run to open the scoring in the first quarter, a 35-yard TD run in the second quarter, an 80-yard TD in the third quarter and a 41-yarder in the fourth quarter. The 80-yard run was his second 80-yard TD run in the past three games.

- The 241 rushing yards by Martinez is the eighth-most rushing yards in school history and the 34th 200-yard rushing game in NU history. He set a single-game rushing record for a Nebraska quarterback, bettering Jammal Lord's 234 yards against Texas in 2002. The 200-yard rushing day was the first by an NU player since Marlon Lucky had 233 yards against Nevada in 2007, and it is the most by any Husker since Calvin Jones' school-record 294 yards at Kansas in 1991. Jones was also a redshirt freshman in that game. Martinez owns four of the top 12 rushing efforts by a Nebraska freshman, including the top four among freshmen quarterbacks.

- Martinez has 12 touchdown runs this season, just the fourth Nebraska freshman to have at least 10 rushing touchdowns, joining Calvin Jones and DeAngelo Evans with 14 and Ahman Green with 13. Of those 11 rushing touchdowns, eight have covered at least 20 yards. Tonight's game marks the first time NU has had a player rush for four touchdowns since true freshman David Horne rushed for four touchdowns at Texas A&M in 2002.

- The 241 rushing yards marked Martinez's fourth 100-yard rushing game of the season. With his 241 rushing yards tonight, Martinez has 737 yards this season and he is now fourth on the Nebraska freshman rushing list. Martinez is averaging 10.8 yards per rush this season and has 12 runs of 20 yards or longer this season.

- Martinez also completed 5-of-7 passes for 128 yards, and a 79-yard touchdown pass to tight end Kyler Reed. The Martinez to Reed connection was Nebraska's longest pass play since Jammal Lord connected with Matt Herian for an 80-yard touchdown pass against Colorado in 2002.

- Martinez accounted for a Nebraska freshman record 369 yards of total offense. His total offense mark surpassed Calvin Jones' 294 total offensive yards at Kansas in 1991. The 369 yards of total offense ranks in a tie for 11th in school history. Martinez has had at least 263 yards of total offense in four of five games this season.

- Senior I-back Roy Helu Jr. rushed for 110 yards on eight carries in tonight's game, marking his third 100-yard rushing game this season and the 10th of his career. With his 110 yards, Helu Jr. increased his career rushing total to 2,574 yards and moved up three spots to 11th on the NU career rushing list. He is now 125 yards from the Nebraska career top 10 (2,699 yards).

- Helu's 68-yard touchdown run in the third quarter was a career-long rush, bettering his 65-yard touchdown run at Washington on Sept. 18. Helu Jr. has seven career rushes of at least 50 yards, including three this season. Helu Jr. has five rushing touchdowns this season and 22 in his career.

- Nebraska rushed for 451 yards as a team in tonight's game, its first 400-yard rushing game since putting up 413 against Nevada in 2007, and the most since posting 641 yards at Baylor in 2001. It marked NU's first 400-yard rushing game in conference play since 2001. Tonight's game marked the first time Kansas State has allowed 400 rushing yards since Colorado gained 518 rushing yards in 1989.

- This was the Huskers' third game this season with more than 300 rushing yards. Coupled with the 383 rushing yards at Washington, Nebraska rushed for more than 300 yards in back-to-back road games for the first time since 2001 when NU topped 300 rushing yards in back-to-back games at Missouri and Baylor. Nebraska has topped 200 rushing yards in all five games this season, its longest streak of 200-yard rushing games since topping 200 yards in six straight games at mid-season in 2002.

- Nebraska senior Mike McNeill pushed his career receptions total to 67 in the game. McNeill's 67 catches are the most ever for a Nebraska tight end, bettering the previous record of 65 by Matt Herian from 2002 to 2006. Although McNeill is lining up at receiver this season, he spent his first three seasons as a tight end and accumulated 61 of his career receptions at that position.

- Nebraska junior linebacker Lavonte David finished the game with 16 tackles, marking his third double-figure tackle game of the season. David had 19 tackles in NU's win over South Dakota State (tied for seventh-most in NU history). He leads the team with 60 tackles this season.

- Senior place-kicker Alex Henery connected on a 39-yard field goal in the first half and a 40-yarder in the fourth quarter. He is now 54-of-61 in his career on field goals, with just two misses of less than 49 yards. Henery has made 12 straight field goals and his 54 career field goals are just three shy of the NU record of 57 held by Kris Brown (1995-98). Henery also made all six of his PAT attempts and has made 90 straight extra points.

- Nebraska had four scoring drives of five plays or less tonight and has 17 scoring drives of five plays or less this season.

- Nebraska did not allow a K-State player to account for 300 yards of total offense, marking the 22nd straight game NU has not allowed an opposing player to reach 300 yards of total offense.

- Tonight's game captains were junior CB Alfonzo Dennard, junior LB Lavonte David, senior OT D.J. Jones and junior FB Ryan Hill.
