No. 9 Bears Outlast No. 38 Huskers

Waco, Texas--- For the second straight match, the No. 38 Nebraska men's tennis team dropped a tough 4-3 decision after being defeated by No. 9 Baylor Sunday night. Playing in their second straight Big 12 road match, the Huskers split the singles matches with the Bears, but were unable to capture the doubles point. The loss drops the Huskers' overall record to 13-9, and 1-3 in conference play.

The duo of Calin Paar and David Bendheim (NU) collected the only doubles victory for NU when they took down Denes Lukacs and Roberto Maytin (BU) at the No. 1 spot 9-8. Francois Van Impe and Benedikt Lindheim (NU) fell to Attila Bucko and Julian Bley (BU) at the No. 2 spot, while freshmen Andre Stenger and Brandon Videtich (NU) were defeated by Sergio Ramirez and Maros Horny (BU) at the No. 3 spot. It was the first time all season Stenger and Videtich paired for a doubles match.

In singles, Paar and Van Impe led the Huskers as both opened singles play with victories to give NU a 2-1 advantage. No. 96 Paar defeated No. 32 Jordan Rux (BU) at the No. 2 spot 6-4, 6-4, while Van Impe defeated his second ranked opponent of the season taking down No. 109 Attila Bucko (BU) at the No. 3 spot. Head coach Kerry McDermott thought Paar and Van Impe did a good job playing in front of a hostile crowd on the road.

"Calin and Francois did a great job for us tonight," McDermott said. "They faced some real adversity and battled back to give us the lead. Calin is playing really well for us, and it was good to see them come out and battle like they did."

After dropping matches at the No. 5 and 6 spots, Lindheim (NU) was able to improve his Big 12 record to 3-1 when he defeated Roberto Maytin (BU) at the No. 4 spot in three sets to give the Huskers their final point. McDermott was proud of the way his team competed, but pointed to doubles play as something the Huskers must improve on.

"I told them we had to find a way to win doubles, but we couldn't get it done," McDermott said." We always feel like we can play with anybody in singles. I think something good is going to come from this loss, whether it is on the practice court this week or in our next match. I feel like we are going to improve."

The Huskers return to the court on Friday, April 23, when the travel to Norman, Okla., to take on the nationally ranked Oklahoma Sooners. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
