Huskers Defeat To Missouri Valley Conference Foes

The Huskers kicked their season off with a bang on Saturday, Jan. 16, with a pair of victories over in-state foe Creighton and Illinois State. NU dominated both matches defeating Creighton 6-1 and Illinois State 7-0. The Huskers only dropped one singles and doubles match a piece on the day, as David Bendheim, Benedikt Lindheim and Eric Sock all won both singles matches they played in. Lindheim was most impressive only dropping three sets in his two matches while playing at the No. 3 spot against Creighton and the No. 5 spot against Illinois State.

Three Huskers Appear in National Rankings

The Nebraska men's tennis team was well represented in the ITA's preseason tennis rankings which were released on Tuesday, Jan. 5. Sophomore Christopher Aumueller, junior Calin Paar and Van Impe all appeared in the Top 100 singles rankings. NU's three ranked players is the most in school history. The only Big 12 team with more players ranked in the Top 100 was Texas, which had five players appear in the rankings. As a team, the Huskers will begin their season ranked at No. 65.

Aumueller started the season ranked at No. 30 after collecting 10 victories this fall and making an appearance in the finals of the Central Regional Championships in Tulsa, Okla. The reining Big 12 Newcomer of the Year defeated Alexander Pelaez (Creighton) 6-2, 6-2 in his first match of the season. Aumueller was ranked at No. 97 in the ITA's final rankings last season.

Paar began the season ranked at No. 76, while Van Impe started his senior season ranked at No. 91. Paar went 7-5 this fall and finished last spring with a 12-10 overall record. Both Paar and Van Impe won their first matches of the season on Saturday, Jan. 16, against Creighton and Illinois State.

Aumueller Joins Elite Class With Preseason Ranking

Coming off one of the most successful freshman seasons in program history, Aumueller will look to continue his success as a sophomore playing at the Huskers' No. 1 spot. The reigning Big 12 Newcomer of the Year entered the season ranked at No. 30 in the national singles rankings, which is the highest ranking for a Husker since Steven Jung in 1989 when he finished the year ranked at No. 16 and was the runner-up in the NCAA singles tournament.

Three Freshmen Make Debuts

Freshmen Eric Sock, Andre Stenger and Brandon Videtich all made their Husker debuts on Saturday, Jan. 16, against the Creighton Bluejays. Sock, who is a Lincoln native, defeated James McAvoy (Creighton) 6-2, 6-4, in his first match as a Husker. Sock then defeated Xavier Bairt-Ferrer (Illinois State) in the second match of the day to improve his record to 2-0. Stenger wasn't as fortunate in his Husker debut falling to J.T. Christian (Creighton) at the No. 4 spot. Redshirt freshman Brandon Videtich also played in his first sping dual match as he paired up with Drew Freeman and defeated Bryan Lube and Sean Mathison (Creighton) at the No. 3 doubles spot.

As a team, the Highlanders finished with a 20-3 overall record and a 6-0 record in the Big South Conference. Radford is coached by Mike Anderson.

The Gophers are coached by Geoff Young.
