The Nebraska rifle team fell to the Alaska-Fairbanks Nanooks on Monday at the NU Rifle Range, 4,680-4,595. The Huskers scored a 2,325 in air rifle, but suffered a 2,270 in smallbore in the loss.
"We did not shoot very good smallbore today," Head Coach Morgan Hicks said. "It was a little lower than I had wanted to see. There is a lot of stress going on in their lives as it is the end of the semester, and I think some of that came out today."
Christine Costello led NU with a 585 in air rifle, although her air rifle score did not count toward the Huskers' team score. Combined with her 572 in smallbore, Costello led NU with an overall 1,157. Joyce Kim posted a 582 for the air rifle team score to go with her 573 smallbore individual score, for a 1,155 total.
Amanda Jeffries scored a 1,151 for the team total, while Ryann McGough and Janine Dutton each shot 1,145. Jeffries, McGough and Dutton all scored 581 in air rifle. Katie Kostal led NU with a 574 in smallbore, although it came as an individual.
Alaska-Fairbanks' Patrik Sartz was the combined champion, scoring the top mark in air rifle at 595 and tying with two teammates for the top score in smallbore at 583, for an overall total of 1,178.
Monday's match closed out the fall portion of NU's schedule. The Huskers, who dropped to 6-3 on the season, don't compete again until Jan. 17, when they travel to Murray State to face the Racers as part of a four-match stretch that sets up the GARC Championships in February.
"We are sitting pretty good right now for our average, but this is the time when we need to step it up a notch and really push towards championships," Hicks said.
