Norman, Okla. - The Nebraska women's tennis team concluded action on the first day of the Wilson/ITA Central Region Championships on Thursday in Norman, Okla. Madeleine Geibert and Wiveca Swarting advanced to the third round in the Singles Draw, while a pair of NU doubles teams also advanced in the Doubles Draw.
Five Huskers are in action throughout the rest of the week at the tournament, including senior Wiveca Swarting, junior Abby Buxton, sophomores Madeleine Geibert and Jennifer Holmberg and freshman Stefanie Weinstein.
Geibert and Swarting each advanced through the first two rounds of the Main Singles Draw, defeating both of their opponents in straight sets. Weinstein also won her first round match before falling in the second round. Buxton and Holmberg were knocked out in the first round, but along with Weinstein is still alive in the tournament and will play in the consolation bracket on Friday.
The doubles teams of Geibert/Weinstein and Holmberg/Swarting each swept their first round opponents 8-0, advancing to the second round.
"It was a very good day for the team today," NU Assistant Coach Hayden Perez said. "The girls competed hard and gave it their best. Everyone is still in action tomorrow and we look forward to another great day."
The Wilson/ITA Central Region Championships continue play on Friday and will conclude on Sunday.
