The Nebraska rifle team dropped to 1-1 on the season after a 4,660-4,634 defeat at the hands of the West Virginia Mountaineers on Sunday at the NU Rifle Range.
Katie Kostal led NU with a 1,662 total, but only her 580 smallbore score counted for the Huskers. The sophomore's 582 in air rifle - which tied her career high - did not factor into the team score. Kostal improved her combined score from Friday's season-opening match by 26 points.
Christine Costello scored a 1,660 individual total for NU. Costello scored 580 in each discipline, tying with Kostal for the team-best mark in smallbore.
Ryann McGough was third overall for NU with a 1,557 score, earning a 581 in air rifle and 576 in smallbore. Amanda Jeffries scored 1,552 for the Big Red - 580 in air rifle and 572 in smallbore.
Freshman Janine Dutton was impressive in air rifle, scoring a team-best and career-high 585. Through two matches, Dutton's 584.5 air rifle average is best on the team.
Among individuals competing for Nebraska in air rifle besides Kostal, Sheena Mahloch scored a career-high 577 and Joyce Kim shot 572. In smallbore, Kim shot a 577, while Mahloch and Dutton each recorded a 557.
NU is back in action next weekend with matches in West Point, N.Y., against NC State and Army.
