Minneapolis, Minn. - The Nebraska women's tennis team had a successful first day at the Minnesota Invitational on Friday afternoon. The Huskers sent five players - Abby Buxton, Chelsea Finnegan, Madeleine Geibert, Jennifer Holmberg and Stefanie Weinstein - to Minneapolis for the tournament.
Both Geibert and Holmberg won their singles matches in straight sets in the Vikings Singles Flight, while Weinstein fell just short, losing in three sets to Iowa State's Erin Karonis, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3). Buxton advanced in the Twins Singles Flight with a straight set win of her own, while Finnegan earned a first-round bye in the Twins Flight.
Geibert and Weinstein won their doubles match in the Timberwolves Doubles Flight, while Buxton and Holmberg fell short in doubles in the Swarm Doubles Flight.
The Huskers will still have everyone competing on Saturday as the tournament continues. Singles play will begin on 10 a.m. on Saturday, and all matches are scheduled to be played outdoors after every match was played indoors on Friday.
