Midland, Texas - The Nebraska women's tennis team began its season on Friday at the Midland Invitational in Midland, Texas. The Huskers sent four players - sophomores Madeleine Geibert, Jennifer Holmberg and Mary Weatherholt and freshman Stefanie Weinstein - to the tournament in Nebraska's first action of the fall season.
Weatherholt, the defending champion at the Invitational, began her quest for a second straight title with a pair of straight-set victories over Sandra Dynka of Texas Tech and Jaclyn Walker of Abilene Christian. Weatherholt also won her doubles match, as she teamed up with Weinstein to take down Catalina Cruz and Narine Kazarova of North Texas.
Geibert also went 2-0 on the day in singles, as she defeated Christina Amo of Texas A&M and Karolina Filipiak of Baylor to advance to the third round of the tournament. Geibert and Holmberg paired up in doubles play and defeated Monika Hadvigerova and Katerina Mlcochova of UT-Arlington.
Weinstein won her first-round match but lost in the second round, which knocked her into the consolation bracket where she will continue play on Saturday. Holmberg lost both of her opening day singles matches, knocking her out of the singles side of the tournament.
