Huskers Take Fresh Approach into 2009 Fairway Club Invitational

The Nebraska men's golf team is set to tee off its 2009-10 season by hosting the ninth Fairway Club Invitational next Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 14-15, at ArborLinks Golf Course in Nebraska City. This is the second consecutive year ArborLinks has played host to the Fairway Club Invitational. Last year, Nebraska tied for seventh in the tournament, which was shortened to 36 holes becuase of bad weather.

The tournament begins with shotgun starts at 8:30 a.m., both days. Thirty-six holes will be played on Monday, and the final 18 will follow on Tuesday. South Dakota State is the defending champion.

On paper, Nebraska is set to fare much better this year. Nebraska Head Coach Bill Spangler said he can't remember seeing as many scores in the 60s from his guys as he did in qualifying this week. Senior leader Brandon Crick is coming off an extremely successful summer on the amateur circuit, while junior returning stroke leader Mike Coatman, according to Spangler, played his best golf in a long time during qualifying for the Fairway Club, earning the top spot in the NU lineup.

In addition, 2007-08 stroke leader Andrew Wyatt - who missed last year's season opener because of an injury - is full strength and ready for his junior season. On top of that, Neil Dufford, a freshman from Midland, Texas, joins the fray. Dufford recorded the second best 90-hole total in qualifying - trailing only Coatman, and is poised to play in the Huskers' No. 2 position in his first collegiate tournament. Scott Willman, who ended his freshman year on a positive note, rounds out the five-man roster for the opening tournament.
