Youth Movement Big Part of ’09 Huskers

This is my first attempt at blogging. Never in my life did I think I’d describe myself as a husband, father, friend, broadcaster, tweeter, and now blogger. Over the course of the year I hope that I can take you inside my mind on what I think and why I think specific things about Nebraska Athletics.

A Culture Based on Values

Bo Pelini has talked about culture in great detail since taking the job here at Nebraska. What is that culture he’s trying to capture? I would assume the things he values are very similar to what the farmer in Oakland values or the executive in Omaha values: hard work, competitiveness, self-discipline, and respect. I could probably add quite a bit more to that list, but I’m fairly positive that anyone who follows the program understands my point.

The thing that I’ve noticed about fall camp is that Bo’s culture is becoming a reality. The “buy-in” is at an all-time high around here. Guys are hustling from drill-to-drill, and if they’re not, someone in their position group is letting them know about it.

Leadership is starting to become a plentiful thing on this team. The competition at each position seems more intense. Just look at cornerback for example; Anthony West, Prince Amukumara, Alfonzo Dennard, Dejon Gomes, and Andrew Green are all vying for time. Notice that I did not mention 2007 starter Anthony Blue or 2008 (and likely 2009) dime back Lance Thorell. Both of those kids could have a big impact before it’s all over too. This is a deep group, and I anticipate this competition is going to greatly help this group become one of the most improved units on the team in 2009.

A Youth Movement in ?09

I’ve already mentioned Andrew Green as a young freshman who  is going to impact the 2009 season. In my estimation, you’ll see well over double-digit freshmen play and have roles on this squad. Will Compton, Sean Fisher, Kyler Reed, Ben Cotton, Khiry Cooper, Jeremiah Sirles, Baker Steinkuhler, Cameron Meredith, Josh Williams, Cody Green, Andrew Green, Antonio Bell, and Rex Burkhead are “two-deep” kind of players. This is an extremely exciting prospect for the future.

This staff’s greatest strength, in my opinion, is the energy they bring to practice every day. After every repetition, you see literally every position coach running out to their guys and instructing them on how they can execute that particular call better and if they’re read was correct or not. It’s because of this staff’s ability to teach that we are going to see so many young talented players contribute in 2009.
