Phipps Clears Regional Mark at Penn Relays

Philadelphia, Pa. ? The No. 11 men’s and No. 24 women’s Nebraska track and field teams returned to Franklin Field on Saturday for the final day of the Penn Relays. Throughout their two days in Philadelphia, Pa., the Huskers set a school record in the men's 4x110-shuttle hurdle relay, Kirkland Thornton tied the school record in the men’s 110-meter hurdles and Epley Bullock jumped to No. 2 nationally in the women’s high jump with a leap of 6-1 1/4.

After already clearing the regional standard twice this year in the men’s long jump, true freshman Chris Phipps added his name to the triple jump list with a season-best leap of 49-6 1/4. A native of Patterson, N.J., Phipps joins sophomore teammate Nicholas Gordon as a qualifier in both events.

The men’s 4x400-meter relay team ended the meet with a season-best time of 3:06.74. Adam Dailey, Thornton, Cylend Simmons and Lukas Hulett took second-place in the consolation division of the race, finishing second to Auburn’s time of 3:06.34. The time cuts nearly a second off the Huskers’ previous regional-qualifying time of 3:07.70 at last weekend’s John McDonnell Invitational.

The Huskers will now head back to Lincoln for tomorrow’s Nebraska Open at Ed Weir Stadium. The meet is set to start at 11 a.m. with the women’s hammer throw and men’s javelin. Action on the track will begin at Noon with the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase. Admission is free to all, while fans unable to attend can find live results at Huskers.com.
