Huskers Open Homestand With Three Victories

Lincoln? The No. 41 Nebraska men’s tennis team won three matches on Saturday, March 7, as they opened the home portion of its schedule at the NebraskaTennisCenter.  The Huskers hit the ground running as they beat WichitaState in the first match of the day, 7-0. In the second and third matches, NU was equally as impressive defeating Bradley and UMKC by the same score.  NU dropped only two combined matches in all three matches, both coming at the No. 3 doubles spot.  With the three victories, the Huskers record improves to 11-2 on the season.

In singles, Christopher Aumueller (NU), Renato Melo (NU), Benedikt Lindheim (NU) and Calin Paar (NU), all tallied three wins on the day.  After playing at his normal No. 2 spot in his victory over Arian Chermaci (WSU), Paar moved up to the No. 1 spot for the Bradley match where he defeated Milos Romic (BU) 6-5, 6-4.  It was Paar’s first win at the No. 1 spot in two tries this season.  Senior captain Renato Melo (NU) boosted his spring record to 5-1 on Saturday after collecting three singles victories. The Huskers went a combined 18-0 in singles play, with only two of those matches going to a third set.

In doubles, David Bendheim and Paar (NU) continue to improve their doubles record after starting the year 0-5.  The duo rang up three wins today to improve their record to 7-6 on the season. In their first action of the season, freshmen Jake Lysgaard and Drew Freeman (NU) fell to Evgeny Samoylov and Michel Macara-chvili (BU) 8-4 at the No. 3 doubles spot. The teams of Aumueller and Lindheim (NU) and Van Impe and Stahmer (NU) both collected two doubles victories on the day.

After playing three matches in one day for the first time in program history, head coach Kerry McDermott said he couldn’t be happier with the mental toughness his team showed today.

“It was a very good day for us.  I think today was good for us mentally,” McDermott said.  “Good teams try to continue to dominate and that’s what we did. We came back and might have been a little tired, but we came back and played really well.  To play three matches in one day for the first time ever and play like we did, showed some great mental toughness by our guys.”

The Huskers return to action on Saturday, March 21, when they take on the BYU Cougars at the NebraskaTennisCenter at 7:30 p.m.
