Hulett Improves NCAA Ranking

Lincoln, Iowa - With the NCAA Indoor Championships just one week away on March 13-14 in College Station, Texas, the Nebraska track and field team headed to Ames, Iowa, for the Cyclone Last Chance and to Seattle, Wash., for the Washington Last Chance meets on Saturday, in hopes of improving its NCAA rankings.

In Ames, four-time NCAA All-American Lukas Hulett made the most of the Lied Center’s 300-meter oval, running an oversized personal-best time of 46.58, bettering his previous best of 46.71 that he ran on the same track during the preliminaries of the 400 meters at the 2007 Big 12 Indoor Championships. Hulett’s time placed him fifth at the meet, while the time is projected to tie him for 11th with two other sprinters in Division I after the completion of the weekend’s meets.

Later, Hulett returned to anchor the men’s 4x400-meter relay team, which also included Adam Dailey, Kirkland Thornton and Dan Christensen. The event included top teams from across the country, as the top 14 team all recorded NCAA provisional-qualifying times. The Huskers finished eighth with a season-best time of 3:08.10, improving on their previous 2009 mark of 3:08.54. It is projected that the Huskers will rank No. 14 in Division I at the end of the weekend, with an NCAA berth possible.

Following the first Big 12 Championship of his career last weekend, senior Keith Lloyd took one more shot at qualifying for nationals in the shot put. Lloyd took top honors with a personal-best toss of 59-7 3/4, while teammate Trey Jordan finished second with personal-best throw of 59-1 1/2. With marks entering the weekend, Lloyd is tied for No. 19 in Division I, while Jordan ranks No. 23.

In Seattle, Natalja Callahan ran an oversized best of 4:43.76 in the mile, dropping over four seconds off her previous best of 4:47.94. Callahan’s indoor season is likely over, as she would rank No. 43 among times entering the weekend.

Accepted entries for the 2009 NCAA Indoor Championships are expected to be released by the NCAA sometime around 8 p.m. (Central) on Monday, March 9.
