Tempe, Ariz. ? The No. 12 Nebraska women’s gymnastics team finished first at UNO’s Classic hosted by Arizona State, posting a season-high score of 196.75 at ASU’s Well’s Fargo Arena on Friday night. The Huskers, who improved to 11-3 on the year, finished ahead of Arizona State (196.00), Cal State Fullerton (194.50) and Ball State (192.925).
The Huskers started strong on beam, after a switch in the line-up this week, with Brittnee Habbib starting off the event for NU. On floor, the Huskers came through without the help of a home crowd, as they hit landings and performed well in the clutch. Nebraska finished the day going 6-6 on bars, achieving the feat for the first time this season.
“Doing what we did today is the first step to becoming even better,” Head Coach Dan Kendig said. “It helps the girls gain confidence that they can do it, and it couldn’t come at a better time. With performances like tonight’s, we’re getting in championship mode.”
Kylie Stone took the all-around title en route to the Huskers’ win with a 39.475.
Nebraska opened the meet on beam, where Tricia Woo led the way with a 9.875. Kathryn Howard posted a 9.80 as Stonestarted her night with a 9.85. Brittnee Habbib tallied a 9.775, and Kristin Fyffe added a 9.675. Nebraska finished the first rotation behind ASU (49.10) with an event score of 48.975, Cal State Fullerton totaled a 48.55 and Ball State a 48.20.
NU continued on to floor, with Stone tying her career-high score of 9.925 for first and Evenstad hitting a 9.90 to take second. Habbib and Woo each received a 9.875, and Erin Davis scored a 9.80. Following the second rotation, Nebraska posted an event score of 49.375, giving them a team score of 98.35 to take the lead over Arizona State (97.575), Ball State (96.95) and Cal State Fullerton (96.65).
Nebraska moved on to vault, where Woo received a 9.90 to take second and Stone hit a 9.875 for third in the event. Davis and Nathe both contributed a 9.85, and Fyffe tallied a 9.75. The Huskers totaled a 49.225 in the event and continued with a lead at 147.575 over ASU’s 146.925, Cal State Fullerton’s 145.45 and Ball State’s 144.70
The Huskers capped the evening on bars, sweeping the top three spots as Brittney Williams led the team notching a 9.875 to take the event title. Evenstad received a season-high 9.85 for second in the event. Stone and Nathe tied for third, hitting a 9.825, tying Nathe’s season-high mark. Habbib added a score of 9.80. and Howard a 9.725. NU finished the event with a score of 49.175, securing the win with a total score of 196.75. Behind the Huskers was Arizona State 196.00, Cal State Fullerton 194.50.
“Our performance at this meet tonight couldn’t happen at a better time,” Kendig said. “We need that confidence for UCLA, and that is what we got today.”
In the second half of their two-meet weekend on the road, Nebraska travels to No. 7 UCLA for a dual with the Bruins on Sunday. Competition is set to begin at 4 p.m. at Pauley Pavilion.
